Minister Blocks Automatic Tickets for APC Defectors

Minister Blocks Automatic Tickets for APC Defectors

A Call for Fairness and Inclusivity in APC Enugu

The Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, has issued a clear message to those considering switching allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State. He emphasized that while the party is open to new members, there will be no automatic ticket or shortcut for anyone, regardless of their previous political standing.

During an expanded stakeholders meeting held in Enugu on Saturday, Nnaji addressed concerns about individuals who are attempting to enter the party through unconventional means. He referred to these individuals as "politically displaced politicians" who have been actively seeking ways to join APC, often without proper engagement with the party's internal processes.

This statement could be interpreted as a subtle reference to Governor Peter Mbah’s potential interest in joining the APC, which has raised concerns among some members fearing the loss of their positions or ambitions. Nnaji urged those considering a switch to abandon the idea of receiving any special treatment and instead participate in the party's primary elections.

He explained, “APC has come to stay; that is why from every nook and cranny, people want to join APC. And as we said earlier, we want people to come in, but we will not give them a free ticket; they must go to the contest.”

Nnaji further clarified that anyone interested in running for the governorship of Enugu State should approach the party with the same dedication as any other candidate. He added, “If the President of Nigeria wants to come and run for the governor of Enugu State, let him come, we will support him. If the former governor of anywhere wants to join us, let him come; we will run the primaries. It will make it even easier, the primary will be the main election.”

He also highlighted the presence of many internally displaced politicians in Enugu—individuals who lack a political home and are currently unaffiliated with any party. Nnaji encouraged these individuals to consider joining APC, emphasizing that the party is committed to welcoming them if they are prepared to contribute meaningfully.

Recognition of Party Leadership and Supporters

The Minister praised the state chairman of the party, Ugochukwu Agballah, and the executives at all levels, from Ward to State, for their hard work and commitment. He also acknowledged the support of other stakeholders, assuring them that their efforts would be rewarded.

Three members of the House of Representatives, who recently defected from the Labour Party (LP) to APC, including Hon. Sunday Umeha (Udi/Ezeagu), Hon. Chimobi Atu (Enugu North/Enugu South), and Prof. Paul Nnamchi, pledged their support for APC's victory in the 2027 elections. They expressed confidence that the party would secure all political positions in the state, including the governorship seat.

Umeha shared his personal journey, stating that he overcame various challenges to become the first elected official to defect to APC Enugu State. He was soon followed by Hon. Atu and Hon. Prof. Nnamchi, revealing that more lawmakers, including a senator, are expected to join APC soon.

Encouraging Active Participation in Electoral Processes

The State Chairman, Agballah, highlighted the significant growth of APC Enugu State, crediting Minister Nnaji for his long-term support and sponsorship of the party. He encouraged all members to actively participate in the upcoming continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Agballah reminded party members that starting from the end of August, attending Ward meetings will require a valid voter card. He reiterated the importance of primaries and proper nominations within the party, stating, “There will be a primary in APC, there will be proper nomination in APC.”
