YABATECH Alumni Lead Push for Historic University Status

YABATECH Alumni Lead Push for Historic University Status

A Vision for Excellence: Yaba College of Technology’s Transformation

The alumni of Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) have made a bold commitment to mobilize resources, expertise, and strategic partnerships in order to transform the institution into a University of Technology and Vocational Studies. This transformation aims to position YABATECH among Nigeria’s most prestigious universities, marking a significant milestone in the country's educational landscape.

At the 2025 Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the YABATECH Alumni Association, held at Emmanuel Unachukwu Hall in Yaba, the National President, Yemi Osibajo, a prominent builder, described the event as historic. The AGM, themed “Alumni Unity and Synergy for Exponential Development,” was more than just a ceremonial gathering—it was a call to action for all stakeholders involved.

Osibajo emphasized that a united alumni association holds immense power. He stated, “A united alumni association is a powerful force — capable of transforming institutions, influencing policy, driving innovation, and spurring national development.” His words resonated with the attendees, who recognized the critical role they play in shaping the future of YABATECH.

The proposed upgrade of YABATECH is not merely a milestone but a mandate that requires strategic collaboration between the alumni, industry partners, government, and the broader public. Osibajo highlighted that the future of technical and vocational education in Nigeria depends largely on the collective efforts of these groups.

To achieve its ambitious goals, the alumni association has set its sights on benchmarking itself against the alumni network of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This move is driven by the similarities in institutional heritage and aspirations for global excellence. Osibajo expressed the association’s vision: “Our goal is to position YABATECH—once converted—as Nigeria’s leading University of Technology and Vocational Studies.”

In a goodwill message, the Chairman of the College Governing Council, Prof. Funso Isolaowa Afolabi, praised the progress that led to the National Assembly bill for the institution’s conversion. He called it “long overdue” and acknowledged the Federal Government’s recognition of YABATECH’s legacy of excellence. As Nigeria’s first tertiary institution, YABATECH has consistently ranked as the nation’s top polytechnic, and this transition is seen as a well-deserved acknowledgment of its academic distinction.

Afolabi noted, “This is not an act of kindness. It is recognition of decades of academic distinction and the production of some of the finest professionals, innovators, and leaders in every sector of national life.” His remarks underscored the significance of the transformation not only for YABATECH but for the entire Nigerian education system.

Similarly, the Chairman of the Alumni Board of Trustees, Wing Commander Solomon Olawale Ajayi (rtd), referred to the transition as “a rebirth of purpose.” While acknowledging the cause for celebration, he urged members to prepare for the hard work ahead. He emphasized that the journey to becoming a university of global repute will require full alignment, unshaken loyalty, and unwavering support from all stakeholders.

The alumni have pledged to work closely with all parties involved to ensure that YABATECH’s evolution into a world-class university is marked not only by a change in status but also by a significant leap in academic and technological impact. This collaborative effort reflects a shared vision for the future, one where YABATECH stands as a beacon of excellence in technical and vocational education across Nigeria.
