AFSHTS Qualifies for 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz Finals

The Armed Forces Senior High Technical School (AFSHTS) in Kumasi has successfully secured its place in the finals of the 2025 National Science and Maths Quiz (NSMQ). The school, represented by students Ms Lois Eshun, Ohene Adjei Talker-Davis, and Israel Hayford, achieved a total score of 61 points during the regional qualifiers held in Kumasi. This surpassed the required 40 points needed to qualify for the national stage.

This marks the 11th time that AFSHTS has reached the national level of the competition, showcasing their consistent performance and dedication over the years. Among the other schools competing in the regional event, the Wesley Girls SHS also qualified with 42 points, while Konadu Yiadom Catholic SHS and Aduman SHS scored 16 and 13 points respectively, falling short of the qualification threshold.

Ohene Adjei Talker-Davis, a 19-year-old form three science student, shared his excitement about the achievement during an interview. He expressed gratitude to God for the success and noted that the team’s score exceeded their expectations. "We only aimed to reach the 40-point mark, but we managed to go beyond that," he said.

Talker-Davis acknowledged the challenges the team faced, particularly the limited resources available for preparation. Despite these obstacles, he remained optimistic about their potential to reach the quarter-finals if they could access more study materials and support. "Our performance in the regional competition shows that we can make it further if we work harder and get the necessary books to study," he added.

Ms Patience A. Donkor, another 19-year-old form three science student and member of the NSMQ team, urged various stakeholders to assist the team as they prepare for the national level. She highlighted the specific needs of the team, including NSMQ Riddle books, Biological Science books with extensive terminology, NSMQ Advance Shortcut books, a clock, extra food, and committed teachers.

Donkor emphasized that while the team already had some teachers supporting them, additional dedicated educators would be crucial for their success. "We need more committed and focused teachers to guide us through this journey," she stated.

Mr. Hud K. A Sulaiman, the NSMQ Coordinator at AFSHTS, confirmed the team's lack of sufficient study materials and resources. He expressed hope that the team would advance to the quarter-finals, which could help them secure a seed for the 2026 competition. Sulaiman praised the team for their hard work and acknowledged the support from the headmaster and administrative board.

He also called for financial assistance to sponsor the team throughout the competition, noting that the school had already contributed what it could. "We are doing our part, and we now need external support to ensure the team can compete effectively," he said.

The journey of the AFSHTS NSMQ team reflects not only their academic prowess but also their resilience and determination. With the right resources and support, they have the potential to make a strong impact at the national level and beyond.
