Training Media Professionals to Combat Technology-Facilitated GBV

Image
Addressing Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence Through Training More than 25 journalists and social media influencers recently completed a three-day training in Kigali focused on technology-facilitated gender-based violence (TFGBV). This issue is becoming increasingly relevant as internet usage continues to rise across the country. The workshop, organized by the Health Development Initiative (HDI), aimed to enhance participants’ ability to identify, prevent, and report on TFGBV using ethical and gender-sensitive communication methods. Annonciata Mukayitete, Senior Programme Officer for Gender Equality and Social Inclusion at HDI, highlighted that the training was created to address a problem that has often been overlooked in Rwanda. She explained that while TFGBV may seem like a new concept, it is part of the broader issue of gender-based violence, but one that is exacerbated by technology. “Online violence takes various forms. It’s a global issue, and Rwanda is not immune t...

Personal Experience and Public Commitment to Suicide Prevention During a recent press conference, Japanese Education Minister Toshiko Abe opened up about her personal experience with the tragic loss of a classmate who died by suicide. This moment came as part of broader discussions on efforts to prevent youth suicides, particularly during times when the risk tends to rise, such as after summer break. The conversation took place following a Cabinet meeting on September 5. In response to questions regarding the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s initiatives, Abe emphasized the importance of protecting children from the devastating impact of suicide. She stated, "Children should never have to take their own lives. We will continue to work closely with other government agencies and do everything we can to prevent suicide." Gender Gaps in the AI Era

Image
The Intersection of AI and Gender Inequality In an era where Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping the global workforce, a troubling pattern emerges: women's bodies often become the ultimate sites for the exertion of force by men. This issue has gained urgency as AI replaces human labor in various sectors, leading to widespread job displacement and societal upheaval. As machines and algorithms take over tasks once performed by humans, the structure of labor is being redefined, and with it, the dynamics of power and vulnerability. Historically, during times of societal disruption, women have often borne the brunt of instability. Whether due to colonization, pandemics, or technological advancements that rendered certain skills obsolete, the consequences have frequently fallen heavily on women. These periods, while distinct in their causes, share a common outcome: the redirection of male frustration and disempowerment toward women. This phenomenon highlights a deep-rooted patter...

Hong Kong Must Protect Dignity of Its Elderly

Image
Addressing the Crisis of Isolation Among the Elderly The recent discovery of the remains of an elderly resident in a public housing flat has once again brought attention to the growing issue of isolation among the aging population. This tragic event, which occurred in Kwai Tsing district, is not an isolated incident. It highlights a deeper systemic problem that requires urgent and comprehensive action. As the primary provider of housing for the elderly, the government holds a critical role in addressing this crisis. The current social safety network is insufficient to support the increasing number of elderly individuals living alone or with an elderly spouse. Without proper support systems in place, such incidents are likely to become more frequent unless effective measures are implemented. Several initiatives have been introduced to tackle this issue, but they remain fragmented and lack coordination. A centralized approach is necessary to ensure that all efforts are aligned and imp...

Youth Mental Health Struggles

The Silent Crisis: Mental Health Challenges Among Pakistan's Youth In recent years, a growing but often ignored issue has been quietly impacting the lives of many young people in Pakistan—mental health. This crisis is particularly evident among students, who face a combination of academic pressure, fear of unemployment, and exposure to harmful social media culture. These challenges are compounded by a lack of professional support systems, leaving many young individuals struggling with anxiety, depression, and burnout. Despite the severity of this problem, mental health remains a topic that is rarely discussed openly in homes or institutions. The stigma surrounding mental illness continues to prevent many from seeking help, further exacerbating the situation. According to global health organizations, nearly 10-15% of Pakistan’s population suffers from some form of mental illness, with an alarming increase observed among students following the pandemic. This rise in mental health i...

Gov's 'Failure' to Support White Working-Class Students, Says Phillipson

Image
The Education Secretary's Concerns About White Working-Class Students The Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, has raised concerns about the performance of white working-class students in the UK. She emphasized that these students are not receiving the support they need to succeed academically and professionally. As GCSE results day approaches, she highlighted that four-fifths of children from white working-class backgrounds struggle with basic English and maths skills. This issue is having a significant impact on the country’s productivity and economy. In 2024, only 19% of white British, working-class children achieved a strong pass in both maths and English GCSEs. This trend has been consistent since 2017, raising serious concerns about the long-term implications for society. Phillipson expressed her dismay at the situation, stating that it is not just the future of these children that is at stake but also the health of the nation as a whole. She pointed out that many indi...

Risks of AI Companionship

The Rise of AI Companions Among Teenagers In recent years, there has been a growing trend among teenagers to seek companionship, support, and even romantic connections through artificial intelligence (AI) applications. These digital friends offer a unique form of interaction that is always available, non-judgmental, and tailored to the user's needs. However, this shift in social dynamics raises important questions about the long-term effects on young people's emotional and social development. According to a study conducted by Common Sense Media, a U.S.-based non-profit organization focused on media and technology reviews, approximately three out of four U.S. teens have used AI companion apps such as Character.ai or Replika.ai. These platforms allow users to create virtual friends or partners with whom they can communicate through text, voice, or video. The research, which surveyed 1,060 teens aged 13-17, revealed that one in five teens spends as much or more time with their A...

Moral Decay Unveiled

Image
The Erosion of Moral Values in Modern Society In recent years, our society has experienced a significant decline in moral values. Fundamental principles such as honesty, respect, kindness, responsibility, and empathy are increasingly being overshadowed by selfishness, dishonesty, and social indifference. This shift is not just an individual issue; it has far-reaching consequences that affect the entire structure of society. As trust, justice, and cooperation begin to erode, the fabric of our communities weakens. One of the primary contributors to this moral decline is the pervasive influence of modern technology and media. While technological advancements have brought numerous benefits, they have also exposed individuals—especially the youth—to content that promotes materialism, violence, and vulgarity. Social media platforms often prioritize fame, wealth, and power over character and integrity. This creates a culture where appearance and short-term gains are valued more than long-te...
