Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Plant Partially Resumes Operations After Flood Damage

Image
Resumption of Operations at Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Plant Kathmandu, Dec. 7 — The Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Plant in Rasuwa, developed by Chilime Hydropower Company, has resumed partial operations following a significant flood event that damaged its infrastructure. On June 8, a glacial burst in Tibet's Lhende River triggered a severe flood that caused extensive damage to the plant’s structures, including the headworks. After completing repairs on the headworks, water was temporarily diverted from the river, and one of the three units in the powerhouse was restarted on Saturday. The plant has an installed capacity of 111 megawatts, with each unit producing 37 megawatts. The remaining two units are expected to be operational within a month, according to Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) Managing Director Manoj Silwal. He also mentioned that other repair work in the headworks area will be completed before the next monsoon season. NEA holds the majority stakes in Chilime Hydropower Com...

Ho Chi Minh City Seeks $2B Boost for Second Metro Line

Image
Overview of the Ben Thanh–Tham Luong Metro Line Expansion The long-stalled Ben Thanh–Tham Luong metro line in Ho Chi Minh City is undergoing a significant transformation. Officials have proposed increasing the total investment to VND52.047 trillion (US$1.98 billion), up from the previous amount of VND47.89 trillion. This increase aims to support expanded construction, updated technology, and rising costs associated with the project. The proposal was included in a revised plan for Metro Line 2 submitted by the Management Authority for Urban Railways (MAUR). The city has decided to shift the project's financing from ODA loans to its own budget, which has prompted the need for additional funding. Key Changes and Project Scope Alongside the nearly 9% increase in funding, MAUR has proposed expanding the project scope. This includes adding a new link to Metro Line 1 at Ben Thanh Station and upgrading facilities within the Tham Luong depot. These changes are intended to ensure the ro...

HCMC Launches $370M Canal Dredging Plan to Combat Southern Floods

Image
Ho Chi Minh City authorities have proposed a VND9.2 trillion (US$370 million) project to dredge and upgrade the Ba Lon Canal, one of the city's seven key drainage arteries, as flooding and pollution intensify across wards in its southern parts. The city People's Committee has submitted the proposal to the municipal People's Council for immediate consideration, seeking approval to launch what officials describe as a critical infrastructure intervention to protect the fast-growing southern urban zone from recurring inundation. Heavy rain and rising tides caused about 2 km of Tran Xuan Soan Street in HCMC to be flooded on Oct. 17, 2025. Photo by VnExpress/Gia Minh Stretching 7.4 km from the Doi Canal in former District 8 to the Ba Lao Canal in the former Binh Chanh district, the Ba Lon Canal will be fully dredged and reinforced with nearly 10 kilometers of embankments. The plan also calls for a new 1km road, 12-18m wide, and the construction of the Ba Lon 2 Bridge spanni...

China's Construction Materials Shipment to Morocco China Railway Fourth Engineering Bureau Group has successfully completed the shipment of 161 tons of construction materials to Morocco, aimed at supporting the Rabat-Casablanca Expressway Section 4 project. This development marks a significant step in the ongoing infrastructure initiatives between China and Morocco. The final batch of coiled scaffolding was dispatched from the Fuyang Branch’s freight yard and is set to travel via Shanghai Port to Casablanca by sea. This transportation process highlights the logistical coordination required to ensure that the materials reach their destination efficiently and on time. The Project Overview The project, valued at 1.25 billion dollars, is part of Morocco’s 2025–2032 national investment plan. Its primary goal is to enhance connectivity between Rabat and Casablanca, which are the country’s two main economic hubs. By improving this critical transportation link, the project is expected...

Two-Thirds of Construction Fatalities at Small Sites

Image
Understanding the Disproportionate Risk at Small-Scale Construction Sites Recent data reveals a troubling trend in workplace safety within the construction industry. About two-thirds of worker fatalities that occurred at construction sites last year took place at small-scale sites with project costs below 5 billion Korean won. This alarming statistic underscores a growing concern about the safety conditions at these smaller operations. According to information provided by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, a total of 212 workers lost their lives at small-scale sites with project costs under 5 billion Korean won. This number represents 64.6% of all worker fatalities, which totaled 328. The data shows that more deaths occur at relatively small-scale sites than at large-scale ones. This pattern has been consistent over the past four years, with fatalities at small-scale sites accounting for 68.5% in 2023, 69.4% in 2022, and 71.4% in 2021. Why Are Small-Scale Sites More Dangerous? ...

HLGA Battery Plant construction halt delays trial operations

“Construction here has been halted. No one knows when it will resume.” A foreign worker encountered at the entrance to the construction site of the HLGA Battery Plant, a joint battery factory between Hyundai Motor Group and LG Energy Solution in Ellabell, Georgia State (State), U.S., said on the afternoon of the 11th, “We hope everything returns to normal,” before adding these words. This is the site where U.S. immigration authorities conducted a surprise raid and seizure on the 4th of last month, arresting 317 Korean workers. The workers were released from detention early that day after a week but immediately returned to Korea, leaving the ongoing construction at a standstill. A source from LG Energy Solution said, “Effectively, work has come to a complete halt since the 4th.” From the entrance to the construction site, about a dozen cranes for high-altitude work stood motionless. There was one road leading to the construction site, with passenger vehicles occasionally passing through...

Is This the Answer to the Housing Crisis? Aussie Family Builds a Home in Weeks

Image
A New Era in Housing Construction In a time when thousands of Australians are struggling to find affordable housing, a family-owned company is making waves with its innovative approach to construction. FutureFit, based in Drouin, Victoria, is revolutionizing the way homes are built by drastically reducing construction times and offering a viable solution to the country's housing crisis. The company has demonstrated impressive efficiency, completing 10 townhouses in Melbourne from slab to lockup in just 51 days. This achievement highlights the potential of modern construction methods, particularly the use of European panelised building technology. According to Peter Ward, the founder of FutureFit, this technology allows for the assembly of a double-storey townhouse prefab kit in just 2.5 days. Ward believes that if this system is widely adopted, it could provide affordable housing solutions such as a three-bedroom family home built within three months for less than $500,000. He e...

Innovating Healthcare Solutions in Nepal In the heart of Kathmandu, the Spinal Injury Rehabilitation Centre houses a unique space known as the wheelchair graveyard room. This room is filled with hundreds of wheelchairs that once provided mobility to patients but now sit broken and unusable. Most of these wheelchairs were donated from various parts of the world, and due to their different brands and models, even minor damages render them irreparable. To address this issue, researchers at the Design Lab, a mechanical engineering lab based at Kathmandu University, are working on producing essential medical devices locally for patients with disabilities. Their goal is to make these devices more affordable and tailored to the specific needs of Nepali patients. Localising Medical Device Manufacturing Led by Assistant Professor Pratisthit Lal Shrestha, the Design Lab was established in 2019 to create a space where engineers can bring their ideas to life. The lab has since grown significan...
