President Julius Maada Bio, the leader of Sierra Leone and the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, recently made a visit to express his condolences to President John Dramani Mahama of Ghana. This gesture came in response to a tragic helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight individuals, including several high-ranking officials.

During the visit, President Bio shared his deep sorrow over the incident. He emphasized that the event had significantly altered the purpose of his initial trip to the region. Originally planned as an inaugural tour for his role as ECOWAS Chairman, the journey took on a more solemn tone following the tragedy.

“I was deeply saddened when the incident occurred on August 6, 2025. I had to change the focus of my visit from a regional tour to a condolence visit,” he said. His words reflected not only personal grief but also a broader sense of unity among the ECOWAS community.

President Bio extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the Government and people of Sierra Leone. He acknowledged the pain felt by the families who lost loved ones and the entire population of Ghana. “As a unified ECOWAS community, we stand with you in solidarity, sharing in your grief,” he stated.

“This loss weighs heavily on me personally, as many of those who perished were close friends. Your presence transcends a visit from Sierra Leone; it represents the support of the entire region. Thank you for joining us in this time of mourning,” President Mahama remarked.

He also provided updates on the upcoming funeral arrangements and assured the public of the government's commitment to thoroughly investigating the crash. This commitment reflects a determination to learn from the incident and prevent future tragedies.

Earlier in the day, President Bio visited Jubilee House, where he laid a wreath and signed the book of condolence. This act of remembrance highlighted the significance of the occasion and the respect shown to the victims.

Among those who lost their lives in the helicopter accident were prominent figures such as Ghana’s Minister of Defence, Edward Omane Boamah; Minister of Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation, Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed; and six other individuals. Their passing marked a significant loss for the nation and its leadership.
