A New Era of Agricultural Cooperation Between Nepal and China

Chitwan, August 11 — A significant event took place at the China-Nepal Southern Agricultural Science and Technology Park Hybrid Rice Demonstration Zone, marking a major step in the agricultural collaboration between Nepal and China. The China Foundation for Rural Development (CFRD) and Nepal’s Agriculture and Forestry University (AFU) conducted the first trial seedling transplanting ceremony on Monday, symbolizing the deepening partnership between the two nations.

This event coincided with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Nepal and China, highlighting the importance of their long-standing relationship. The ceremony was not just a celebration but also a demonstration of commitment to enhancing agricultural development and food security in Nepal.

During the ceremony, 37 high-yield hybrid rice varieties were transplanted as part of an ongoing demonstration project. These varieties are being tested to determine their suitability for Nepal's unique climate, soil conditions, and farming practices. This initiative is expected to bring about significant improvements in rice production and contribute to the country's food security.

The event brought together a wide range of participants, including Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song, Bharatpur Metropolitan City Mayor Renu Dahal, AFU Vice Chancellor Sharada Thapaliya, Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development Deepak Kumar Kharal, CFRD Nepal Office Country Director Zou Zhiqiang, and several Chinese and Nepali agricultural experts and researchers. Senior officials from AFU, the chief district officer of Chitwan, and nearly 100 local villagers also attended the ceremony.

Advancing Global Food Security Through Collaboration

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Chen Song emphasized the importance of promoting China's hybrid rice technology as a vital component of global agricultural cooperation. He highlighted that this technology is one of China's contributions to global food security governance. Through joint research and technology exchange, China aims to support developing countries like Nepal in achieving food self-sufficiency and improving agricultural productivity.

Experts from Chongqing, China, are working closely with AFU and Nepali research institutions to identify hybrid rice varieties that are best suited for Nepal's environment. This collaboration is crucial for ensuring that the selected varieties can thrive under local conditions and deliver optimal yields.

Strengthening Food Security and Climate Resilience

Thapaliya, the AFU Vice Chancellor, noted that this project goes beyond mere seed testing. It is designed to strengthen Nepal's food security, enhance climate resilience, and accelerate agricultural modernization. By combining Chinese expertise with Nepal's local knowledge, hybrid rice technology has the potential to transform the country's rice sector and improve the livelihoods of farmers.

Bharatpur Mayor Renu Dahal expressed her appreciation for the efforts of the Chinese government, the Chongqing Academy of Agricultural Sciences, CFRD, and other project partners. She stated that the hybrid rice project is expected to increase agricultural productivity, significantly improve food security, and uplift community livelihoods. This initiative is also seen as a way to strengthen the friendship and cooperation between Nepal and China.

Commitment to Project Success

Zou Zhiqiang, CFRD Nepal Country Director, thanked all participants and supporting organizations, including the Ministry of Agriculture and partner groups. She pledged to leverage CFRD's local expertise to ensure the project's success and meet the expectations of leaders from both countries. Her commitment reflects the importance of this initiative in fostering sustainable agricultural development in Nepal.

This collaborative effort between Nepal and China represents a promising approach to addressing the challenges of food security and agricultural sustainability. As the project progresses, it is anticipated that the benefits will extend beyond the immediate participants, positively impacting communities across the region.
