Families, friends, and prominent figures from across Ghana have come together at the forecourt of the State House to pay their respects and honor the memory of eight Ghanaians who tragically lost their lives in a helicopter crash near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region. The gathering is part of a solemn reflection and memorial ceremony aimed at commemorating the departed citizens.
The event is expected to be marked by a series of meaningful activities, including hymns, short speeches, a candlelit procession involving both military and civilian representatives, and heartfelt prayers for the souls of the victims. President John Dramani Mahama will take the lead in conducting the solemn ceremony. As hundreds of Ghanaians gather in a somber mood, the country reflects on the tragic incident that occurred on Wednesday, August 6. The accident resulted in the loss of several key individuals who were deeply involved in public service and national development.
Among the victims are Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, the Minister of Defence, and Alhaji Dr Murtala Mohammed, a Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and the Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology. Other notable casualties include Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, the Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator; Samuel Sarpong, Vice Chairman of the National Democratic Congress; and Samuel Aboagye, the Deputy Director-General of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
Additionally, Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo, all members of the Ghana Air Force, also lost their lives in the crash. Their passing has left a profound impact on the nation, as they were respected figures in their respective fields.
In addition to the memorial ceremony, a state funeral will be held on Thursday, August 15, at the Black Star Square. This inter-denominational service will serve as a final farewell to the eight heroes who have made significant contributions to the country’s progress and stability.
