Burial Arrangements for Two Victims of Obuasi Helicopter Crash

Two individuals who lost their lives in the tragic helicopter crash near Obuasi will be laid to rest on Sunday, August 10, 2025. The funeral arrangements have been carefully planned, with preparations already underway at the military cemetery in Accra. These two victims, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed and Alhaji Muniru Limuna Mohammed, were among the eight casualties from the ill-fated Ghana Armed Forces Z-9 helicopter. They are the only Muslims on board and will be buried following Islamic customs and practices.

The burial rites for both individuals will take place at the Forecourt of the State House in Accra. A special prayer known as Salat al-Janazah, a Muslim community prayer offered for the deceased, is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. Following this, the burial will occur at 2:30 p.m. at the Military Cemetery in the capital city.

Details of the Funeral Procession

The funeral committee has confirmed that the two men will be interred at the military cemetery after the prayers. The graves have already been prepared, with an excavator seen digging two holes at the site. Additionally, tents have been erected and decorated with the colors of Ghana, indicating the significance of the event.

The tragedy occurred when the Z-9 helicopter crashed and caught fire in the Sikaman Forest within the Adansi South District of the Ashanti Region. The aircraft was carrying a high-level government delegation en route to Obuasi for the launch of the Responsible Cooperative Mining and Skills Development Programme (rCOMSDEP). Among the eight victims were notable figures including the Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, former Ashanti Regional Minister and NDC Vice Chairman, Dr. Samuel Sarpong, and others.

Government Response and National Mourning

In the wake of the incident, government delegations led by Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang and Julius Debrah were sent to inform the families of the deceased. The delegation included several key officials such as NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, Presidential Advisor Joyce Bawa Mogtari, Deputy Defence Minister Brogya Genfi, Youth and Sports Minister Kofi Adams, and Chief of Defence Staff Major General William Agyapong.

A three-day national mourning period was declared, beginning on Thursday, August 7, and ending on Saturday, August 9, 2025. This period culminated in a vigil honoring the eight victims. Due to the severity of the burns sustained by the victims, DNA testing was conducted. On August 7, samples of the victims were airlifted to South Africa for analysis. While the results have not yet been officially released, the decision to proceed with the burials suggests that the identities of the deceased have been confirmed.

Ongoing Investigations

Investigations into the cause of the helicopter crash are currently ongoing. The incident has left a profound impact on the political and military landscape of the country. As the nation mourns the loss of these prominent individuals, efforts continue to determine the root cause of the tragedy and prevent similar incidents in the future.
