President John Mahama Addresses Nation on Tragic Military Helicopter Crash
President John Mahama delivered his first public address following the tragic military helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, marking a moment of deep national sorrow. The incident resulted in the loss of eight lives, including two prominent ministers: Defence Minister Dr Edward Omane Boamah and Environment, Science and Technology Minister Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed. In his speech from the Jubilee House, Mahama emphasized the need for unity as the country grapples with this devastating event.
"This is not the time for division, speculation, and political point-scoring. It is a time for strength, for empathy, and for the enduring Ghanaian spirit that still stands tall when all else fails," Mahama stated. His words reflected both personal grief and a call for collective resilience.
A Deep Personal Loss
The president expressed heartfelt condolences to the families, friends, and loved ones of the deceased, recalling his close relationship with some of the victims. He praised them as gallant men who served with distinction and highlighted their contributions to the nation. Mahama also announced that a state funeral will be held on Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square, honoring the memory of those lost.
Investigation into the Crash
In addition to his emotional address, Mahama confirmed that the Ghana Armed Forces have launched a comprehensive investigation into the cause of the crash. An Investigative Board of Inquiry has been established to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident. "I want to assure the families and the nation that the Ghana Armed Forces has initiated a full and transparent investigation into the circumstances of this crash," he said.
Condolence Books Opened
To allow citizens to express their condolences, books of condolence will be opened from Sunday, August 10, to Thursday, August 14, at several key institutions. These include:
- The Ministry of Defence
- The Ministry of Environment, Science and Technology
- The Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- The Ghana Armed Forces Headquarters
- The National Democratic Congress (NDC) headquarters
- The head office of NADMO
Wreath-Laying Ceremony
Earlier, Mahama attended a candlelight and wreath-laying ceremony in honor of the eight lives lost in the crash. The event took place in the Ashanti Region and was part of a three-day mourning period. Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah, NDC leaders, Members of Parliament, and other dignitaries were present.
The ceremony marked the beginning of a solemn period of reflection. Flower-laying and candle lighting will continue on Friday, August 8, allowing more citizens to pay their respects. The three days of national mourning will conclude on Saturday, August 9.
Replacing Ministers Killed in the Crash
In response to the tragedy, President Mahama has appointed Finance Minister Dr Cassiel Ato Forson to serve as acting Defence Minister. Lands and Natural Resources Minister Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah will temporarily oversee the Environment, Science and Technology portfolio. The presidency announced this decision on August 7, stating that Mahama requested Forson and Buah to take on these additional responsibilities. No specific timeline was provided for the appointments.
