NJI Calls on Court Staff to Adopt Tech and Uphold Ethics

Embracing Digital Innovation and Ethical Standards in Court Administration

The Administrator of the National Judicial Institute, Justice Babatunde Adejumo, has emphasized the importance of digital innovation, ethical conduct, and professionalism among court staff. His remarks were made during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Hybrid National Workshop on Court Process Management, held at the National Judicial Institute in Abuja.

Justice Adejumo addressed participants, including Registrars, Clerks, Bailiffs, Confidential Secretaries, Protocol Officers, and other administrative staff from across the judiciary. He highlighted the critical role that these individuals play in shaping public perception of the justice system. As the first point of contact for members of the public, their actions and behavior often leave a lasting impression on how people view the judiciary.

“The Workshop reflects a recognition of the central role that our Registrars, Commissioners for Oaths, Clerks, Bailiffs, Confidential Secretaries, Protocol and Information Officers, Public Relations Officers, and all other administrative staff play in the smooth and effective delivery of justice in our courts,” he said.

He stressed that modern justice administration requires court personnel to embrace innovation, maintain high ethical standards, and deliver services with a strong sense of responsibility. Justice Adejumo reminded the participants that the impressions they create in their daily duties can shape public perception of the entire justice system.

The Role of Technology in Modern Judicial Administration

Justice Adejumo also emphasized the transformative impact of technology on the justice sector. He urged court personnel to become familiar with modern tools such as electronic filing systems, case tracking platforms, and digital record management. These technologies are now essential for enhancing judicial effectiveness and efficiency.

He warned against any form of misconduct, noting that ethical lapses could damage public trust in the judiciary. “Ethical conduct plays a fundamental role in bolstering public trust in the judiciary. Any form of impropriety, unethical conduct, or lapses in your behavior can have far-reaching consequences,” he said.

As custodians of sensitive information and processes, court staff must prioritize accountability and confidentiality. Justice Adejumo encouraged them to consistently demonstrate integrity and avoid activities that could bring the judiciary into disrepute.

Strengthening the Judiciary Through Efficiency and Best Practices

The theme of the workshop, “Building a Stronger Judiciary Through Effectiveness,” aligns with the National Judicial Institute’s core objectives: promoting efficiency, uniformity, and improvement in the quality of judicial services in both superior and lower courts.

Justice Adejumo explained that the theme underscores the importance of strengthening public trust and institutional competence through improvements in court administration. The workshop serves as a platform for skills enhancement, knowledge sharing, and exposure to evolving best practices.

Over the next few days, seasoned moderators and resource persons will share their expertise on various topics, including:

  • Managing court calendars and scheduling hearings and trials
  • Supporting remote hearings and virtual courtrooms
  • E-filing and digital record keeping
  • The Code of Conduct for Court Employees of the Federal Republic of Nigeria
  • Other key issues related to the roles of court staff

A Commitment to Professionalism and Ethical Leadership

Justice Adejumo expressed his pleasure at being part of the workshop, highlighting that it coincides with his first official outing as the Administrator of the National Judicial Institute. He noted that his experience as a Deputy Chief Registrar in the Supreme Court of Nigeria gave him a unique perspective on the importance of court services as the operational backbone of the judiciary.

He encouraged all participants to remain diligent and maintain a high standard of professionalism at all times. By embracing innovation, upholding ethical standards, and delivering services with a sense of responsibility, court staff can contribute significantly to the effectiveness and credibility of the justice system.

The workshop is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills needed to navigate the challenges of modern judicial administration. It offers an opportunity to learn from experts, exchange ideas, and explore new approaches to improving court operations.
