The passing of Chief Audu Ogbeh, former Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, has prompted widespread tributes from prominent political figures across Nigeria. His death at the age of 78 marked the end of a life dedicated to public service, education, and national development.
Ogbeh’s family released a statement expressing their deep sorrow over his passing. Born in Otukpo, Benue State, Ogbeh pursued higher education at Ahmadu Bello University in Zaria and later earned a degree from the University of Toulouse in France. His academic career included a rise from teaching assistant to head of the Language, Arts, and Social Sciences Department at Murtala College of Arts, Science, and Technology in 1977.
A Distinguished Political Career
Ogbeh’s political journey began in 1979 when he was elected to the Benue State House of Assembly, where he served as Deputy Speaker. He later held key ministerial roles, including Minister of Communications (1982–1983) and Minister of Steel Development until the December 1983 coup. After stepping back from politics, he focused on agriculture, running rice mills, cashew plantations, and agricultural consultancy projects.
He returned to public service with his involvement in the National Constitutional Conference Commission in 1993 and the National Reconciliation Committee in 1995. As a founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he served as its National Chairman from 2001 to 2005. His opposition to President Olusegun Obasanjo’s third-term agenda led to his resignation, showcasing his commitment to democratic principles.
Ogbeh later returned to government under the Muhammadu Buhari administration as Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, continuing his work in shaping policies that supported rural communities.

President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to Ogbeh, highlighting his intellectual contributions to policy formulation and his ability to provide practical solutions to complex national challenges. Tinubu noted that Ogbeh, who joined politics in the 1970s as a legislator, was a founding member of the All Progressives Congress. Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, currently in Uganda, expressed his sadness over Ogbeh’s passing. He described the late minister as a peace-loving, unassuming, committed patriot and a firm believer in democracy and participatory governance. Obasanjo emphasized that Ogbeh’s political career spanned from the military era through the present democratic dispensation, making his contributions to the re-establishment of democracy in Nigeria significant.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki praised Ogbeh for his integrity and commitment to public service. He described the late leader as a rare figure whose words carried weight and who was deeply rooted in good values. Saraki extended condolences to Ogbeh’s family and expressed hope that they find strength in their grief.
Recognition from Regional and State Leaders
Inuwa Yahaya, Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum and Governor of Gombe State, hailed Ogbeh as a towering political figure and a statesman of uncommon intellect. He emphasized that Ogbeh brought dignity and depth to every office he held and served the country with integrity and commitment. Yahaya called his death a huge loss not only to Benue State and the North but to the entire nation.
Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia expressed his sadness over Ogbeh’s passing, noting that the former minister lived a successful and fulfilled life. Alia highlighted Ogbeh’s many roles, including his work as a politician, former Federal Minister of Communications, former Minister of Steel Development, former chairman of the PDP, farmer, and playwright. He added that Ogbeh’s legacies would always be remembered.
Former Delta State Governor James Ibori praised Ogbeh as one of the most effective chairmen the PDP ever produced. He highlighted Ogbeh’s commitment to internal democracy and his refusal to engage in underhanded schemes. Ibori extended heartfelt condolences to Ogbeh’s family and wished his soul peace.
