Appointment of New Acting Vice-Chancellor at Yakubu Gowon University
Yakubu Gowon University in Abuja has recently announced the appointment of Prof. Matthew Adamu as Acting Vice-Chancellor. This decision marks a significant development in the university’s leadership structure, following the conclusion of the tenure of the previous Acting Vice-Chancellor.
According to an official statement, Prof. Adamu will serve in this role for a period of three months, starting from August 11, 2025. The announcement was made by the Acting Director of Press, Dr Habib Yakoob, who emphasized the importance of maintaining stability and continuity during this transition phase.
Prof. Adamu will take over from Professor Patricia Manko Lar, who served as Acting Vice-Chancellor for six months. During her time in office, she played a crucial role in guiding the university through various administrative and academic challenges. Her efforts were instrumental in initiating the selection process for a permanent Vice-Chancellor, ensuring that the institution remained on track with its strategic goals.
The Acting Registrar, Roseline Adakayi, highlighted that Prof. Adamu will work closely with the Governing Council, led by Senator Olanrewaju Tejuoso, to finalize the appointment of a substantive Vice-Chancellor. This process must adhere to the statutory requirements and guidelines set forth by the relevant authorities.
Adakayi expressed deep appreciation for Professor Lar’s contributions, acknowledging her dedication, leadership, and commitment to the university's growth. She also extended her best wishes to Prof. Adamu, hoping that he will lead the university effectively during this critical period.
Background of Prof. Matthew Adamu
Prof. Matthew Adamu is a distinguished veterinary scholar with a long and impactful career in academia and research. His journey began with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree obtained in 1998 from the University of Maiduguri. He further pursued a Master of Science in 2006 from the same institution and later earned a PhD in Veterinary Surgery from the University of Pretoria in South Africa in 2012.
His expertise in the field has earned him recognition, including becoming a Fellow of the College of Veterinary Surgeons of Nigeria. In 2019, he was promoted to full professorship, specializing in Veterinary Parasitology and Entomology (Helminthology).
With 27 years of experience as a registered veterinarian, Prof. Adamu has built a comprehensive career that spans teaching, research, extension services, and supervision of both undergraduate and postgraduate students.
Career Highlights
After completing his studies, Prof. Adamu served as a Youth Corps Veterinarian and Corps Liaison Officer in Dan Musa, Katsina State. He then practiced privately in Minna, Niger State, before joining the Nigeria Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research in Kaduna in 2006.
In early 2006, he moved to the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (now Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University) as a Lecturer II. Over the years, he steadily advanced through the ranks, eventually becoming a full Professor in 2019.
Prof. Adamu’s extensive background in veterinary science and academic leadership positions him well to guide the university through this transitional phase. His appointment reflects the institution’s commitment to maintaining high standards of governance and academic excellence.
