Ankrah champions TVET-led change, urges forward-thinking visions

Embracing Technical and Vocational Education for National Growth
Mr. Elvis Afriyie Ankrah, the Presidential Envoy for Interfaith and Ecumenical Relations, has called on Ghanaians to recognize the importance of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as a key driver for national development. His message came during the launch of a TVET school, dedicated to the late Dr. J. Kofi Turkson, the brother of Cardinal Peter Appiah Turkson.
At the event, Mr. Ankrah emphasized how technical and vocational skills have been instrumental in the economic growth of countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan. He pointed out that when Ghana gained independence, it was on par with these nations. However, he noted that these countries have since moved ahead by prioritizing TVET programs.
“My hope and belief is that with President Mahama’s vision, Ghana can achieve similar progress,” he said. “I even pray our prophets will start seeing visions of Ghana becoming like Malaysia and Singapore, and not just visions of death,” he added, which received strong support from the audience.
Mr. Afriyie Ankrah took the opportunity to clarify his role as the Presidential Envoy. He explained that his main responsibility is to promote interfaith and ecumenical dialogue to enhance national cohesion. He also mentioned that his involvement with issues related to prophecy had only been a temporary response to the numerous doomsday predictions that emerged after a recent helicopter crash. This incident resulted in the loss of eight individuals who were serving the nation.
The launch of the TVET school was seen as a meaningful tribute to Dr. J. Kofi Turkson. His lifelong dedication to education and service exemplified the values necessary for building a resilient and progressive Ghana. The school aims to provide students with practical skills that can contribute to the country's development and create opportunities for employment.
The Role of TVET in Economic Development
Technical and Vocational Education and Training plays a crucial role in equipping individuals with the skills needed for various industries. By focusing on hands-on learning, TVET programs help bridge the gap between education and the workforce. This approach not only enhances employability but also supports economic growth by producing a skilled labor force.
Countries like Malaysia, Singapore, and Japan have successfully integrated TVET into their educational systems, resulting in significant economic advancements. These nations have demonstrated that investing in technical education leads to innovation, productivity, and competitiveness in the global market.
Ghana can learn from these examples by placing greater emphasis on TVET initiatives. By doing so, the country can address the challenges of unemployment and underemployment while fostering a culture of entrepreneurship and innovation.
Promoting National Cohesion Through Dialogue
In addition to advocating for TVET, Mr. Ankrah highlighted the importance of interfaith and ecumenical dialogue in promoting national unity. In a diverse society like Ghana, fostering understanding and respect among different religious groups is essential for social harmony.
His role as the Presidential Envoy involves facilitating discussions that bring together various faith communities to work towards common goals. By encouraging collaboration and mutual respect, he aims to strengthen the fabric of Ghanaian society.
The recent focus on prophecy and doomsday predictions underscored the need for clear communication and guidance from religious leaders. Mr. Ankrah's efforts to address these concerns reflect his commitment to ensuring that the public receives accurate information and support during times of uncertainty.
A Vision for the Future
As Ghana continues to navigate its path toward development, the importance of education and skill-building cannot be overstated. The establishment of TVET schools represents a step forward in preparing the youth for the challenges of the future. By investing in education, the country can empower its citizens and create a more prosperous and inclusive society.
Mr. Ankrah's vision aligns with the broader goal of transforming Ghana into a nation that can compete on the global stage. With the right policies and investments, the country can harness the potential of its people and build a sustainable future.
