AVRATE and VRA Launch New Energy Sustainability Vision at 2025 Congress

Strengthening Partnerships for a Sustainable Energy Future

The Association of VRA Technician Engineers (AVRATE) recently held its Biennial National Delegates Congress 2025, focusing on the theme “Securing a Sustainable Future: VRA and AVRATE in Partnership.” This two-day event brought together a diverse group of participants, including members from the Volta River Authority (VRA), the National Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo), industry experts, and key stakeholders in Ghana’s power sector. The congress aimed to address critical issues related to energy sustainability, capacity building, and strategic partnerships.

On the first day of the congress, Mr. Richard Yamoah, the AVRATE National Chairman and Chief Technician Engineer at VRA, delivered an opening statement emphasizing the association's commitment to strengthening collaboration with VRA and NEDCo. He highlighted the importance of sustainable employment, viable operations, and the role of AVRATE in major national energy projects. His speech set the tone for the discussions that followed, underscoring the need for continued cooperation between the association and the management of VRA.

Engineer Henry Kojo Boateng, the National President of the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) Ghana, delivered the keynote presentation on the congress’s theme. He emphasized the necessity of safeguarding Ghana’s energy assets and investing in renewable technologies such as solar and wind power. He also called for stronger collaboration between government, management, and professionals to ensure the long-term sustainability of the energy sector. His remarks resonated with the audience, highlighting the urgency of adopting forward-looking strategies.

Mr. Edward Ekow Obeng-Kenzo, the Ag. Chief Executive of VRA, served as the Special Guest of Honour. He commended AVRATE for its significant contributions to VRA’s achievements, citing the Anwomaso Thermal Plant project as a testament to the association’s competence and dedication. He reiterated the importance of the congress’s theme, which reflects a mission of unity, innovation, and sustainability. With upcoming capacity expansion projects, he urged AVRATE to continue providing their expertise and commitment while fostering teamwork, knowledge sharing, and collaboration with stakeholders.

Additional insights were provided by senior executives of VRA, including Mr. Samuel Fletcher, Deputy Chief Executives (Services), VRA; Ing. John Okine Yamoah, Ag. Managing Director, NEDCo; and Mr. Dominic Ofosuhene, Director, Human Resources. Their remarks were supported by solidarity messages from organizations such as the Society of VRA Engineers (SOVRAE), Senior Staff Association (SSA), and the Technician Engineers Association of GRIDCo (TEAG).

Focusing on Governance and Capacity Building

The second day of the congress centered on governance and capacity-building activities. Delegates reviewed and adopted reports from the 2022 congress, examined the 2022–2025 financial statements, and participated in an open forum on accountability and transparency. These discussions were essential in ensuring that AVRATE remains aligned with its objectives and maintains a high standard of operational efficiency.

One of the highlights of the day was a panel discussion on Work-Life Balance, facilitated by Mr. Ebenezer Ayanful and Mr. Daniel Doh Datsomor, with moderation by Mr. Evan Eric Amoah. The session encouraged participants to share strategies for maintaining productivity while safeguarding employee well-being. This dialogue reflected a growing awareness of the importance of balancing professional responsibilities with personal health and satisfaction.

The congress concluded with the dissolution of the National Executives, the election of new officers, and the swearing-in of the newly elected leadership. This marked a fresh chapter in AVRATE’s journey, setting the stage for continued progress and innovation in the energy sector.

Commitment to Sustainable Energy Development

The AVRATE National Delegates Congress 2025 reaffirmed the commitment of engineers, technicians, and management of VRA to sustainable energy development, innovative partnerships, and responsible leadership. The event highlighted the critical role that AVRATE plays in shaping the future of Ghana’s energy landscape. Through collaboration, innovation, and a shared vision, the association and its partners are working towards a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy future for the nation.
