Strengthening Pakistan-US Relations

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized the enduring and robust nature of Pakistan-US relations during a recent meeting with the newly appointed US Consul General in Lahore, Stetson Sanders. She described the partnership as reliable, stable, and far-reaching, having stood the test of time for several decades.

The discussion covered a wide array of topics, including trade, energy, technology, agriculture, and educational collaboration. The chief minister welcomed the US diplomat to his new role and highlighted the significant role played by the Pakistani-American community in strengthening people-to-people ties between the two nations. She noted that the United States remains Pakistan's largest and most consistent trading partner, serving as a dependable economic ally.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif also acknowledged the efforts of former US President Donald Trump in trying to mediate between Pakistan and India during recent regional tensions. She viewed these actions as a positive step towards promoting peace and stability in the region. In addition, she outlined the opportunities available in Punjab, mentioning the provincial government's focus on water-efficient farming, precision agriculture, and the development of cold chain infrastructure. She extended an invitation to American agricultural technology firms to explore investment possibilities in these areas.

Development Initiatives in Punjab

Referring to recent development projects, the chief minister informed the US diplomat about the introduction of a state-of-the-art electric train in Punjab. She also mentioned the rapid progress being made on the Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar programme, which aims to provide public-sector housing within a short timeframe. These initiatives reflect the government’s commitment to improving infrastructure and enhancing the quality of life for residents.

Maryam Nawaz Sharif stated that the appointment of Stetson Sanders comes at a time when Pakistan-US relations are experiencing positive momentum. She added that expanding people-to-people contacts, trade engagement, and shared goals have further strengthened bilateral cooperation. The chief minister welcomed the increase in trade volume between the two countries in 2024 and reaffirmed her government's dedication to transforming the US-Pakistan relationship into a comprehensive and mutually beneficial strategic partnership.

Strategic Vision for the Future

Recalling her earlier meeting with the US Congressional Pakistan Caucus in April 2025, the chief minister highlighted the significance of Punjab, which produces over 20,000 IT graduates annually and serves as the country’s agricultural backbone. She emphasized the province’s potential and its role in contributing to the broader economic and technological growth of Pakistan.

In conclusion, Maryam Nawaz Sharif expressed Pakistan's determination to evolve its partnership with the United States into one grounded in long-term strategic and public interest. This vision reflects a commitment to fostering deeper collaboration and mutual prosperity between the two nations.
