Empowering the Youth Through Technology and Collaboration
In a significant move to foster youth development in the Niger Delta region, the Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, has called on young people to embrace modern technology as a tool for collaboration and partnership. This initiative was highlighted during the 2025 International Youth Day celebration, which was organized by the NDDC in conjunction with the Ganvic Empowerment Initiative in Uyo, Akwa-Ibom State.
Dr. Ogbuku emphasized that the event focused on the importance of collaboration and partnerships in driving youth development. He pointed out that the current era is defined by rapid technological advancements, particularly in artificial intelligence. “We are using this platform to encourage the youth to leverage on the current trend to advance their course of being partners in development,” he said. He added that by engaging with innovative ideas and the latest technologies, young people can ensure they remain relevant and active participants in the region’s growth.
The NDDC’s comprehensive youth empowerment program is not solely the responsibility of the commission. It requires the support of state governments, as Dr. Ogbuku noted. “We have always liaised with state governments in carrying out such programs,” he explained. The commission works closely with these entities to identify and include individuals who may benefit from the initiatives, such as people living with disabilities. This collaborative approach ensures that the programs are inclusive and impactful.
Dr. Ogbuku also encouraged the youth to be hardworking and proactive in their endeavors. He stressed the importance of taking initiative and actively participating in community development efforts. His message was clear: the future of the Niger Delta depends on the active involvement and contributions of its youth.
Mrs. Ahunna Imoni, the Director of the Women and Culture Unit at the Youths Directorate of the NDDC, further reinforced the significance of the event. She described International Youth Day as an opportunity to celebrate the creativity and potential of young people globally. According to her, the day serves as a testament to the renewed commitment of the NDDC’s leadership towards advancing youth development.
She urged the youth to continuously develop their skills and adapt to the changing realities of the world. In an era where digital literacy and technical expertise are increasingly important, she emphasized the need for young people to stay informed and equipped with the necessary tools to succeed.
Mr. Aniekeme Finbarr, a resource person at the event, praised the NDDC for organizing such an impactful program. He described the initiative as an eye-opener for the youth, highlighting its potential to transform lives and inspire positive change in the region.
Through these efforts, the NDDC continues to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the Niger Delta. By focusing on youth empowerment, leveraging technology, and fostering partnerships, the commission is laying the groundwork for sustainable development and long-term growth. The message is clear: the youth are not just the future—they are the present and the key to unlocking the full potential of the region.
