Ghana mourns as sorrow grips the Presidency

National Grief and Mourning Following Tragic Helicopter Crash

The nation is in deep sorrow following a devastating helicopter crash that claimed the lives of eight prominent public officials. The incident, which occurred at Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region, has left the country in a state of mourning. Flags are flying at half-mast across the country, symbolizing the collective grief of the people.

At the Presidency, the atmosphere is one of profound sadness and reflection. The loss of two Cabinet Ministers and six other public figures has shaken the government and the public alike. These individuals were en route to an official event in Obuasi when the tragic accident occurred. Over the past three days, citizens from all walks of life have gathered at the Ceremonial Garden of the Presidency to pay their respects, laying flowers and offering prayers for the departed.

The garden, known for its lush greenery, has become a place of solace and remembrance. Mourners dressed in black have been seen streaming in, many visibly emotional as they express their condolences. The President has taken a step back from his schedule, canceling all planned activities for the week as a gesture of respect for the fallen heroes.

Among the first to visit the garden was President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang. Their presence underscored the gravity of the situation. The President was seen wiping tears from his eyes, highlighting the personal impact of the tragedy on him and the nation.

Several high-profile figures from both political parties and civil society have also visited the garden to honor the deceased. These include Mr Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the NDC, and Mr Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, General Secretary of the NDC. Other notable attendees included First Lady Lordina Mahama, who was accompanied by her children, and Sierra Leonean President Dr Julius Maada Bio, who laid a wreath on behalf of his country and the ECOWAS subregion.

Profiles of the Fallen Heroes

The victims of the crash included:

  • Dr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence
  • Alhaji Dr Murtala Muhammed, Member of Parliament for Tamale Central and Minister of Environment, Science, and Technology
  • Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator
  • Dr Samuel Sarpong, First National Vice Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Mr Samuel Aboagye, Deputy Director-General of National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO)
  • Squadron Leader Peter Anala, Flying Officer Twum Ampadu, and Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah, all from the Ghana Air Force

In a broadcast to the nation, the President expressed his deep personal loss, stating that he had close ties with many of those who perished. He extended heartfelt condolences to their families and emphasized the importance of unity in times of national tragedy.

A Nation United in Grief

The outpouring of support from various sectors of society reflects a strong sense of solidarity. Dignitaries such as former Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, and Alhaji Mahama Iddrisu have all paid their respects. Religious leaders, military officials, and members of the judiciary have also participated in the mourning process.

Acting Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie urged Ghanaians to come together during this difficult time. The Council of State, members of Parliament, and other government officials were also present, demonstrating the widespread impact of the tragedy.

Commemoration and Future Steps

The Government has scheduled Friday, August 15, 2025, as the day for an inter-denominational state funeral at Blackstar Square in Accra. This event will serve as a final tribute to the eight gallant heroes who dedicated their lives to the service of the nation.

President Mahama’s words resonate deeply: “May we all be comforted by the knowledge that, though they are gone from our sight, they remain forever in the spirit of the nation they so faithfully served.” His declaration of a three-day national mourning period underscores the significance of this moment in the country's history.
