Kenyan Teams Advance to FEASSSA Finals
Several Kenyan teams have made their way to the finals of the Federation of East African Secondary Schools Sports Association (FEASSSA) championships. These teams have demonstrated strong performances across various sports, securing their spots in the upcoming final matches.
In the handball category, St Luke’s Kimilili emerged victorious in their semi-final against Uganda’s Bombo Army with a score of 33-27. The match took place at the Masinde Murilo University of Science and Technology on Thursday afternoon. Kimilili, coached by Fernwick Opicho, will now face defending champions Adegi from Rwanda in the final. Adegi defeated Kenya’s Highway Secondary with a score of 23-13 to reach the finals.
St Luke’s Kimilili’s chief principal, Innocent Siro, expressed confidence in their ability to win this year. “We lost to this team last year in Uganda, but this time, we have put strategies in place on how to handle them. We want this trophy to remain in Kenya,” he said.
In the girls’ handball competition, Moi Girls Kamusinga will compete against defending champions Mbogo from Uganda. Kamusinga advanced to the finals after defeating Uganda’s Kawanda with a score of 19-15. Meanwhile, Mbogo overcame Kenya’s St Joseph’s Girls Kitale with a score of 23-20. St Joseph’s Girls Kitale, known as JOGA, settled for third place after defeating Kawanda 25-13.
Volleyball Showdown
In the girls’ volleyball final, East Africa champions Kesogon Mixed will face national champions Kwanthanze High School. Their previous encounter at the national final in Kakamega two weeks ago saw Kwanthanze winning in straight sets.
Kesogon secured their spot in the final by defeating Soweto Academy with a score of 3-0 (25-19, 25-15, 19-25, 25-17). Kwanthanze, coached by veteran Justin Kigwari, defeated Bishop Sulumeti Girls with a score of 3-0 (24-14, 25-23, 25-13) in an all-Kenyan semi-final.
Kigwari expressed his confidence in the team's performance. “We have had a smooth championship, winning without losing a set. I know the final against Kesogon will be difficult, but we are prepared to win,” he said.
Kesogon’s coach, John Marani, is also determined to defend the regional title. “The game will go either way, but it’s our prayer to retain the trophy,” he added.
Boys' Competitions
In the boys’ category, a fierce battle between Kenya and Uganda is expected. Kenya’s Cheptil team defeated defending champions St Luc from Burundi with a 3-2 win in a five-set thriller. This victory earned them a spot in the final against Uganda’s Namugongo, who beat compatriots from Bukedea Comprehensive School in straight sets.
In the boys’ basketball 3x3, St Joseph’s High School will face Rwanda’s A.P.E. Rugunga in the finals. St Joseph’s defeated Buddo Senior School with a score of 21-17, while A.P.E. Rugunga edged out Kenya’s Pioneer School with a score of 21-18.
Girls' Basketball Final
In the girls’ basketball 5x5, the final will be an all-Ugandan affair. Uganda powerhouses St Mary’s Kitende will face St Noa. St Noa defeated Kenya’s Butere Girls with a score of 62-53, while St Mary’s Kitende overcame Rwanda’s E.S.B. Kamonyi with a score of 69-64.
Additionally, in the girls’ category, Ng’iya will play against Buddo Senior School in the final. Ng’iya reached the final after a 12-11 win over national champions Buruburu, while Buddo defeated Kenya’s Tigoi Girls with a score of 16-8.
These exciting matches highlight the competitive spirit and talent among the participating schools, setting the stage for thrilling final events.
