Ardhi University's AI Servers: Transforming Research and Learning

Advancing AI Education and Research at Ardhi University
Ardhi University (ARU) has taken a major step forward in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) education and research with the installation of newly acquired AI servers. This initiative is part of the Applied Human-Machine Intelligence in East Africa (AHUMAIN) project, which is supported by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union. The project aims to enhance AI capabilities across the region through collaboration and innovation.
Dr. Godfrey Luwemba, Head of the Department of Computer Systems and Mathematics (CSM), highlighted the importance of this development during an interview. He explained that the technical setup was completed in partnership with the Research and Education Network for Uganda (RENU), working closely with ARU staff. According to Dr. Luwemba, these AI servers will significantly transform how students are trained and how research is conducted at the university.
The infrastructure supports ARU’s newly accredited Bachelor of Science in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence, which is set to launch in the 2025/26 academic year. It also complements the existing AI laboratory within the CSM department, designed to provide students and researchers with hands-on experience in AI and data science.
Enhancing Collaboration and Computational Power
One of the key benefits of the new AI servers is their ability to promote interdisciplinary collaboration across different departments within the university. This allows researchers and students from various fields to work together on complex AI-driven projects. The servers also significantly boost computational capacity, which is essential for advanced data analysis, machine learning, and other AI-related research.
Dr. Luwemba emphasized that this enhanced capability is expected to improve both teaching and research outcomes. With access to these resources, the academic community can now engage in work that was previously beyond reach. This marks a shift from relying solely on open-source platforms, which often lacked the performance and scalability needed for cutting-edge AI tasks.
The new servers offer a robust internal computing environment, enabling deeper experimentation and skill development. According to Dr. Luwemba, this investment strengthens the university’s ability to attract new students and research partners, reinforcing its position as a center for innovation.

Investing in AI infrastructure is more than just a technical upgrade; it is a strategic move that underscores ARU's commitment to technological advancement in higher education. The deployment of AI servers is also expected to elevate the university’s regional standing.
Dr. Eunice Likotiko, a lecturer at ARU, noted that the investment positions the university as a technological leader capable of forming strategic partnerships with international institutions and the private sector. She added that the presence of an AI server enhances the university’s institutional reputation and directly contributes to national development.
By nurturing graduates skilled in AI, ARU is empowering the next generation to drive innovation and development across Tanzania and beyond.
Student Perspectives on the New Infrastructure
Students have also welcomed the development, with Ms. Golden Haule, a second-year student from the department of computer systems and mathematics, expressing her excitement. She said the new servers provide invaluable access to powerful computing tools, allowing students to work on real-world projects and build practical skills in AI, data science, and innovation.
Ms. Haule believes that this infrastructure shows ARU is keeping pace with global technological trends, which can open doors for more opportunities and partnerships. She added that the hands-on experience will better prepare students to contribute meaningfully to Tanzania’s digital transformation.
