Sri Lanka witnessed an exciting display of teamwork, skill, and spirit at the ninth edition of the 'C' Rugby Tag Carnival. The event, held on August 30 at the CR&FC Grounds in Colombo, brought together students from various schools to compete in a highly anticipated competition. Among the standout performances was the combined old boys and girls team of Vidyartha College and Pushpadana Girls' School, who emerged victorious with a narrow 1-0 win against Science/Girls' High School Mount Lavinia.
The final match was a tense affair, with both teams showcasing strong defensive strategies and cohesive teamwork. Over 2,500 spectators gathered to cheer on the participants, creating an electrifying atmosphere that highlighted the growing popularity of rugby tag in the region.

In addition to the Cup Championship, several other teams secured notable victories. The Plate Championship was claimed by the combined Kingswood/Girls' High School Kandy team, who triumphed over Thurstan/Devi Balika with a score of 2-1 in a thrilling match. Meanwhile, Wesley/Methodist took home the Bowl Championship after narrowly defeating Dharmaraja/Mahamaya with a 1-0 victory.
The tournament featured sixteen teams, each representing a unique blend of schools. Organized by Agoal Rugby under the guidance of renowned international referee Dilroy Fernando, the event has become a significant fixture in the rugby calendar. Its success lies in its ability to revive the traditional spirit of school rugby, with brother schools collaborating with their sister schools—a distinctive aspect of Sri Lanka's rugby history.
Individual Excellence Recognized
Beyond team achievements, individual performances were also celebrated. Vidyartha's Hashan Perera was awarded the Most Valuable Male Player, while Pushpadana's Hashini Mallawa Teennekoon received the Most Valuable Female Player title. These accolades underscore the balance of talent and dedication among the players, highlighting the depth of skill present in the competition.
A Celebration of Culture and Community
The carnival extended beyond the pitch, offering a vibrant celebration of culture and community. Cheerleaders, decorated tents, vendor markets, and street food stalls created a lively environment that engaged both players and spectators. Music performances by bands such as Slipping Chairs, Dreaming of Saturn, Pop Culture, and Section 8, along with DJs Trev D, Rob R, and DJ Ace, added to the festive atmosphere.
In recognition of their efforts, the combined DS Senanayake/Sirimavo Bandaranayake team won prizes for Best Tent Decor and Best Cheerleading Squad. These awards reflected the creativity and enthusiasm that characterized the event, making it a memorable experience for all involved.
