Solid Minerals: Key to Geo-Scientific Discovery

Image
The Challenge of Foreign Dependency in Nigeria’s Mining Sector At present, most Nigerian mining companies, exploration firms, and even government agencies such as the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA) and the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, rely on foreign laboratories for mineral characterization, assay, and compositional analysis. From lithium and gold to rare earth elements and iron ore, the majority of samples extracted in Nigeria are sent abroad for testing. This practice is not only expensive but also time-consuming. The logistics of shipping samples, paying for foreign expertise, and awaiting laboratory reports lead to significant delays in project execution. Worse still, critical geological data often remain in the custody of foreign institutions—compromising data sovereignty and national security. The inability to analyze mineral samples domestically has far-reaching economic consequences. For one, Nigeria loses substantial foreign exchange annually on testing...

37-Carat Rare Pink-Colorless Diamond Found in Botswana

A Rare Two-Toned Diamond Unearthed in Botswana Miners in Botswana have made a remarkable discovery—a two-toned diamond that is half pink and half colorless. Weighing 37.41 carats, this unique gemstone has captured the attention of experts and gemologists worldwide. The rough diamond was examined at a Gemological Institute of America (GIA) laboratory in Botswana, where researchers noted its impressive dimensions: approximately 24.3 by 16 by 14.5 millimeters. Experts believe that this rare gem likely formed in two distinct geological stages deep beneath the Earth's surface. The pink section of the diamond appears to have originally been colorless before undergoing intense pressure changes, which led to its distinctive hue. According to Sally Eaton-Magaña, senior manager of diamond identification at GIA, the pink portion may have been subjected to plastic deformation during a mountain-forming event millions of years ago, resulting in its pink coloration. Meanwhile, the colorless pa...
