Recognition of Pakistan's Nuclear Advancements The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has acknowledged Pakistan’s consistent progress in developing its civil nuclear technology capabilities. This recognition came during a meeting between the IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, and Dr. Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), on the sidelines of the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna. During the discussion, Mr. Grossi expressed appreciation for Pakistan's collaborative efforts with the IAEA. Growing Concerns Over Spent Nuclear Fuel Storage Capacity Projections indicate that spent nuclear fuel storage facilities at major nuclear power plants in South Korea are expected to reach saturation levels starting next year. This revelation has sparked renewed discussions about the limitations of current storage capacities and the need for long-term solutions. According to data submitted by Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) to the office of People Power Party Representative Yu Yong-weon, specific figures on the saturation rates of spent nuclear fuel storage have been disclosed for the first time. These projections highlight the urgency of addressing the issue, especially as several nuclear power plants approach critical levels. The Gori Nuclear Power Plant is expected to hit a saturation rate of 95.1% next year, with the current rate standing at 93.5%. The Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant currently operates at an 85.3% saturation rate, but this is projected to rise to 95.1% by 2029...

The Need for Global Cooperation in Nuclear Technology Access Prof. Francis Otoo, Acting Director General of the Ghana Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA), has emphasized the importance of developed countries taking more responsibility in sharing knowledge and reducing barriers that hinder African nations from accessing advanced nuclear technologies for peaceful purposes. His remarks were made during a panel discussion at the 66th Annual Meeting of the Institute of Nuclear Materials Management (INMM) held in Washington, USA, from 24 to 28 August 2025. Otoo highlighted that for many countries in Africa and the Global South, nuclear energy is not a luxury but a necessity. He stressed its critical role in addressing key challenges such as energy poverty, climate change, food insecurity, and access to healthcare. “For many of us in the Global South, Article IV of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) is not a bonus; it is the very heart of the Treaty,” he said. “The credibility of the NPT dep...
