ASUU Strike Threatened My University Journey — UNIPORT Graduate's Story

A Journey of Resilience and Determination
Miracle Uche, a 24-year-old from Abia State, has carved a remarkable path through her academic journey. Her story is one of perseverance, driven by the values instilled in her during her childhood. She recently shared insights into her upbringing, challenges, and achievements with a journalist.
Growing up in a family of six children—five girls and one boy—Miracle was the youngest. Her father, a tailor in Aba, specialized in school uniforms, while her mother supported him in their business. From an early age, she was involved in the family trade. At just 13 years old, she started sewing during weekends and school breaks. This early exposure to hard work and responsibility shaped her character and mindset.
Her father placed great value on education, even though he himself had only completed primary school. He ensured that all his children attended some of the best schools in Aba. To afford tuition, he often took on jobs from schools in exchange for their payment. This commitment to education laid a strong foundation for Miracle’s academic success.
One of the most vivid memories from her time in the tailoring shop was a particularly demanding job that required working around the clock. The experience, though stressful, taught her resilience and determination. However, it also made her feel different from her peers, who were often attending extra classes during the summer. While others studied for exams, she was at the shop, which affected her confidence after senior WAEC.
Despite this, Miracle never lost sight of her goals. She was always a high-achieving student, maintaining top grades throughout her education. Her passion for learning was fueled by her curiosity about the natural world. This led her to choose Animal and Environmental Biology as her university course, driven by questions about how living organisms interact with their environments.
Initially, this was not her first choice in JAMB. However, as she progressed through her studies, she developed a deep interest in the subject, especially when she began noticing environmental factors affecting human health. The course's broad scope, divided into various options like animal physiology, hydrobiology, and entomology, allowed her to explore her interests further.
At the University of Port Harcourt, Miracle faced numerous challenges, including the disruptions caused by the pandemic and strikes. Despite these obstacles, she remained focused on her studies and actively participated in extracurricular activities. She held leadership roles in her church, department, and student union, while also running small businesses such as selling oil perfumes and data subscriptions.
Balancing academics, social life, and entrepreneurship was no easy task. She rarely attended social gatherings, dedicating her time instead to studying and managing her ventures. Her financial discipline was key to her success. She planned every expense meticulously, buying in bulk to save money and avoiding unnecessary costs.
Miracle also faced moments of doubt, especially after the ASUU strike disrupted her studies. There were times she considered changing courses, but she ultimately chose to return to her original program. Her perseverance paid off, and she graduated with a first-class degree, achieving a CGPA of 4.59.
Her success was not solely due to her own efforts. She credits her elder sister and her husband for their unwavering support. Additionally, several lecturers and a close friend provided encouragement and emotional support throughout her journey.
Miracle’s message to other students struggling with motivation is to look at those who are investing in their education. Their sacrifices can be a powerful source of inspiration. Her story is a testament to the power of hard work, resilience, and the importance of staying focused on long-term goals.
After graduation, Miracle plans to serve in NYSC and pursue pre-NYSC internships in consulting firms. She aims to gain industry experience before considering further studies. Her journey is a reminder that with determination and support, any challenge can be overcome.
