Hajiya Zainab Saleh, a prominent figure in the fields of facility management, real estate, and sports administration, has carved out a unique path marked by determination and resilience. As the Managing Director of Brains and Hammers Facility Management, WhiteOak Management Services Limited, and Robyn’s Realtors Limited, her career reflects a blend of professional expertise and personal passion.

A Life Shaped by Karate

Zainab's journey into karate began during her childhood in Mexico, where she was inspired by the legendary Bruce Lee. Her father, recognizing her interest, enrolled both her and her brother in a dojo. This early exposure sparked a lifelong commitment to the martial art. Over 40 years later, Zainab continues to train and remains an active participant in the karate community as an African Karate Federation (UFAK) Referee and a World Karate Federation (WKF) judge.

Karate, for Zainab, is more than just a physical activity; it is a philosophy that instills discipline, awareness, and self-control. She emphasizes that the practice teaches individuals how to handle any situation with confidence and poise. Despite her extensive training, she has never needed to use her skills in a physical confrontation, noting that her presence alone often deters potential threats.

Breaking Stereotypes and Embracing Freedom

Her early involvement in karate was not without challenges. At a time when the sport was not widely accepted as a "feminine" pursuit, Zainab stood firm in her belief that sport should be accessible to all. She recalls that even today, people still ask if she continues with karate, but for her, the answer is simple: as long as she can move, why stop?

Zainab’s journey also highlights her academic achievements. While she initially aspired to become a doctor, her path took a different turn. She pursued Biochemistry instead, which she believed would serve as a solid foundation for further studies in medicine. However, her interests extended beyond science, leading her to pursue a degree in English Literature as well.

Education and Character Development

Her secondary education at Queen’s College, Yaba, played a pivotal role in shaping her character. The institution provided a nurturing environment that emphasized unity, respect, and understanding. Zainab recalls the strong bonds formed during her time there, which continue to influence her life today. She also continued her karate training at the school, representing it in competitions and fostering a sense of camaraderie among her peers.

A Career Beyond Academia

After completing her education, Zainab entered the workforce, starting her career in an architecture firm in Lagos as an administrative manager. This role exposed her to the construction industry and laid the groundwork for her future endeavors. Later, she helped manage one of her aunt’s buildings, marking the beginning of her career in facility management.

Zainab’s story is one of perseverance, adaptability, and a deep-rooted belief in the power of discipline. From her early days in karate to her professional success, she has consistently demonstrated the qualities that define a true leader.
