Engineers Chase Excellence at Annual Golf Event

A Day of Networking and Professional Growth

The Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) recently held its annual golf day, which took place at the scenic Borrowdale Brooke Golf Estate. This event was more than just a social gathering; it was an opportunity for engineers across the country to come together, network, and engage in meaningful discussions about the future of engineering in Zimbabwe.

The theme of the event was "Promoting Good Engineering Practices," highlighting the importance of maintaining high standards and fostering collaboration within the profession. The event attracted a large number of participants, showing the strong interest and commitment of engineers to improving their practices and contributing to national development.

Emphasizing Collaboration and National Progress

Amend Chiduma, the chief technical officer of Zimplats, served as the guest of honor at the event. He emphasized the need for collaboration and a nation-first mindset among engineers. According to Chiduma, when efforts are siloed, the impact is limited. True progress, he argued, comes from putting Zimbabwe's progress at the center of every project and building local capacities through all possible means.

Chiduma also highlighted the significance of the event as a platform for engineers to socialize and build valuable networks. He stressed that these connections are essential for professional growth and success. Additionally, he pointed out that the ongoing infrastructure projects in Zimbabwe provide a great opportunity to promote good engineering practices.

He encouraged the involvement of young engineers by pairing them with experienced specialists. This approach, he noted, would facilitate technology and skills transfer, ensuring that the next generation is well-equipped to handle future projects with the right level of quality and expertise.

A Collective Responsibility

Sanzan Diarra, the ZIE chief executive officer, delivered a thought-provoking message about the importance of engineering. He stated that engineering is too important to be left solely to engineers. Safeguarding the integrity and future of the profession requires a collective effort involving communities, policymakers, and business leaders to create a resilient ecosystem.

Kevin Mutete, chairman of the Mashonaland Area, emphasized the non-negotiable importance of maintaining high standards in engineering projects. He pointed out that delivering projects to the right quality is not just a technical requirement but also an economic imperative. With the Zimbabwean economy on an upward trajectory, infrastructure development plays a crucial role in sustaining this growth.

Mutete reiterated the importance of reminding engineers of their responsibilities. If they fail to deliver services to the expected level, it could have a negative impact on the economy. The ZIE's decision to bring engineers together was aimed at reinforcing the importance of good engineering practices.

Recognition of Sponsors

The successful execution of the event was made possible through the generous support of various sponsors. These include Credsure, Steel Tech, CAFCA, Techold Engineering, Supreme Brands, Coral Soft, and Cairde Hygienics. Their contributions were instrumental in making the golf day a memorable and impactful event.

Looking Ahead

The annual golf day organized by the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers serves as a reminder of the critical role that engineers play in the country's development. By promoting good engineering practices, fostering collaboration, and investing in the next generation, the profession can continue to contribute to Zimbabwe's growth and prosperity.
