The Rise of Photovoltaic Technology in Morocco's Renewable Energy Transition

Morocco is making significant strides in its renewable energy transition, with a growing emphasis on photovoltaic (PV) technology. Recent developments have seen the Midelt II and Midelt III solar projects awarded to Saudi-based ACWA Power, marking a pivotal moment in the country’s energy strategy. Energy experts are now highlighting the strategic importance of PV systems in driving this shift forward.

Understanding the Shift from Concentrated Solar Power

One of the key reasons behind this shift is the recognition of past challenges associated with concentrated solar power (CSP) technology. The Noor Ouarzazate complex, one of Morocco’s major CSP projects, has encountered various technical issues over the years. These challenges have led experts to advocate for a more efficient alternative—photovoltaic systems.

Amine Bennouna, an energy expert, explains that there are clear technical differences between Morocco’s solar power plants, particularly regarding storage technologies. “These differences impact operational efficiency and overall plant performance,” he said. Bennouna emphasizes that while CSP has its merits, the adoption of PV systems in the Midelt projects offers a more cost-effective solution.

Cost-Effectiveness of Photovoltaic Energy

According to Bennouna, photovoltaic energy is significantly cheaper per kilowatt-hour compared to solar thermal power. This makes PV a more competitive and economically viable option for Morocco’s energy needs. As the country continues to invest in renewable sources, the economic benefits of PV systems are becoming increasingly apparent.

Despite progress in wind energy, Bennouna points out that Morocco is still lagging in meeting its solar energy goals. Delays in the rollout of solar production have highlighted the need for more aggressive strategies and faster implementation of new projects.

The Role of Emerging Technologies

Looking ahead, emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) could play a crucial role in improving the efficiency of solar energy systems. While AI is not yet widely used in energy production, experts believe it has the potential to enhance solar plant maintenance and failure prediction. This could lead to reduced downtime and improved overall performance.

Strategic Importance of the Midelt Projects

Abdelali Tahiri Idrissi, a renewable energy and climate change expert, welcomes the involvement of ACWA Power in the Midelt II and III projects. He views this as a strategic milestone in Morocco’s efforts to reduce reliance on conventional energy sources and achieve sustainable development.

“The development of these two stations will help accelerate Morocco’s national energy transition,” Tahiri said. He added that the projects are central to the country’s renewable energy policy. “They will increase the share of renewables in the national energy mix, strengthen energy security, and reduce harmful emissions.”

Lessons from Past Challenges

Tahiri also noted that the lessons learned from technical issues at the Noor Ouarzazate complex have helped Morocco refine its solar energy strategies. By adopting more efficient technologies, the country is better positioned to meet its renewable energy targets and ensure long-term sustainability.

As Morocco continues to invest in photovoltaic technology, the focus remains on overcoming past challenges and embracing innovative solutions. With the support of global investors like ACWA Power, the country is taking meaningful steps toward a cleaner, more sustainable energy future.
