Its simple design allows it to blend seamlessly into urban infrastructure.
Similarly, Uneole, a French cleantech company, has created wind turbines suitable for rooftop installations. These turbines can be combined with solar photovoltaic (PV) panels, transforming them into hybrid systems that generate electricity from both wind and solar sources. While Uneole's turbines can accommodate more solar panels due to the space available on rooftops, Enlil is specifically designed to capture wind from passing vehicles. Both solutions, if implemented widely, can turn roads and buildings into micro-engines of renewable energy production.
Combining Solar and Wind Technologies
The integration of solar PV panels and wind turbines offers a complementary solution for clean energy generation. On sunny but windless days, solar panels can compensate for reduced wind energy production, while on windy and cloudy days, wind turbines can make up for the loss of solar energy. This combination ensures a reliable and continuous supply of clean electricity, regardless of weather conditions.
From an environmental perspective, this approach would boost clean energy production in urban areas and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. From a financial standpoint, it presents an opportunity to train Pakistan's youth in the clean energy sector, addressing unemployment and narrowing the socio-economic gap between different income groups.

An increase in the installation of small wind turbines would create a win-win situation for Pakistan in terms of social, economic, and environmental sustainability. The successful implementation of these technologies would mark a significant step toward transforming urban areas into hubs of clean energy production. Highways and rooftops in urban areas offer excellent opportunities to harness wind energy from both natural sources and passing vehicles.
