International Workshop Advances Intraoperative C-Arm Imaging in Orthopedics

Advancing Orthopedic Surgery Through International Collaboration
Hong Ngoc-Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital is set to host an international workshop focused on the intraoperative use of C-arm imaging technology in orthopedic surgery. This event will bring together four orthopedic trauma centers from Europe and Asia, offering a unique platform for medical professionals to exchange knowledge and explore the latest advancements in the field.
Dr. Le Quang Huy, MD, PhD, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics and Neurosurgery at Hong Ngoc-Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital, highlights that the increasing preference for minimally invasive surgical procedures has made C-arm fluoroscopy a crucial tool in orthopedic trauma care. The technology enables surgeons to accurately identify entry points, anatomical landmarks, and instrument positioning, especially during complex surgeries such as minimally invasive spine procedures, arthroscopic techniques, and fracture fixation.
Despite its benefits, optimizing the full potential of C-arm technology remains a challenge, as each surgical case requires a tailored imaging strategy. To address this, the hospital is organizing the workshop titled "The Intraoperative Use of C-arm Fluoroscopy in Surgical Practice," scheduled for August 9, 2025. This event aims to provide medical professionals with insights into advanced techniques for managing musculoskeletal disorders.
Key Presentations and Expert Contributions
The workshop will feature participation from global leaders in medical technology and orthopedic trauma, including Siemens Healthineers and renowned specialists from Austria, Japan, Taiwan (China), and Vietnam. Attendees can expect seven scientific presentations and two live surgical demonstrations, offering a comprehensive view of cutting-edge C-arm applications.
Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Dietmar Krappinger, Deputy Director of the Level 1 Trauma Center at Innsbruck Medical University in Austria, will open the workshop with a presentation on minimally invasive techniques for acetabular fracture management. His talk, "Acetabular fracture: Imaging assessment and image-guided modern treatment of complex cases," will emphasize the role of medical imaging in surgical planning and navigation.
Prof. Hiranaka Takafumi, MD, PhD, from Takatsuki General Hospital in Japan, will discuss optimal screw placement in his session titled "Optimizing Intraoperative Imaging during Proximal Femoral Fracture Fixation." Assoc. Prof. Meng-Huang Wu, MD, PhD, Chairman of Orthopaedics at Taipei Medical University Hospital, will present on the integration of artificial intelligence in endoscopic spine surgery, highlighting how AI improves accuracy and reduces damage to surrounding tissues.
Dr. Ming-Fai Cheng from Taipei Veterans General Hospital will focus on the treatment of Terrible Triad Injury of the elbow, while Dr. Le Quang Huy will share insights on achieving precise cup positioning in total hip arthroplasty. His session will cover controlling acetabular inclination and anteversion angles under fluoroscopic guidance, which are essential for reducing dislocation risks in hip replacements.
Live Demonstrations and Technological Innovations
A key highlight of the workshop will be the live-streamed surgical procedures showcasing the use of advanced 3D C-arm technology. Vietnamese specialists will perform these surgeries with real-time guidance from international experts. One of the most anticipated demonstrations will be the spinal surgery "Percutaneous pedicle screw fixation using 3D C-arm," led by Assoc. Prof. Trung Ha Kim, MD, PhD, with expert consultation from Prof. Dietmar Krappinger.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Trung emphasized that the integration of 3D C-arm technology with artificial intelligence allows for automatic lesion detection and segmentation, enabling precise positioning of surgical tools with minimal attempts. Additionally, automated X-ray dose optimization significantly reduces radiation exposure, ensuring safety for both patients and medical personnel.
Expanding Global Collaboration
The organizers believe this workshop represents a significant step in strengthening professional collaboration between Hong Ngoc-Phuc Truong Minh General Hospital and the Orthopaedic Trauma Center of Austria. This partnership aims to foster expanded cooperation with leading orthopedic trauma centers worldwide and promote advanced musculoskeletal treatment techniques in Vietnam.
Beyond the technical sessions, the event will include experience-sharing discussions on hip replacement approaches and strategies for treating humerus intra-articular fractures. These sessions will provide valuable insights into clinical practices and surgical decision-making.
As the field of orthopedic surgery continues to evolve, events like this play a critical role in advancing knowledge, improving patient outcomes, and setting new standards in medical care.
