New SIM Card Rules Issued by Thai Government

Introduction to New SIM Card Registration Measures

In response to a surge in online fraud, the government has introduced stricter regulations for SIM card registration. These new measures aim to prevent criminals from exploiting SIM-swap scams, which have been used to defraud victims by taking over their phone numbers.

Implementation of Liveness Detection Technology

Effective from August 18, the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) will roll out Liveness Detection technology nationwide. This advanced system is designed to verify a user's identity in real-time using facial recognition. The technology is similar to that used in banking applications, ensuring that scammers cannot use photos, videos, or 3D masks to impersonate others.

Scope of the New Regulations

The new system applies to all new mobile subscribers, whether they are on a prepaid or post-paid plan. It also covers existing users who are replacing their SIM cards while keeping the same phone number. This ensures that even those updating their service will be subject to the same rigorous verification process.

Registration Process and Required Documents

To comply with the new regulations, mobile users must register either in person or through applications provided by service operators, service centers, authorized dealers, and retail outlets. All documents submitted must be original and valid.

  • Thai nationals are required to present their national ID card.
  • Foreigners must provide a passport.
  • Corporate users need to submit a company certificate along with identification for the authorized signatory.

These requirements ensure that only legitimate individuals can register for or update their SIM cards, reducing the risk of fraudulent activity.

Data Protection and Compliance

Mobile service providers are obligated to protect personal data in accordance with NBTC regulations and the Personal Data Protection Act. This means that all user information collected during the registration process must be handled securely and confidentially.

Government's Commitment to Cybersecurity

According to Deputy government spokesman Anukool Pruksanusak, the government is taking urgent action to combat cybercrime and safeguard the public. He emphasized that these new measures will significantly reduce the risks associated with phone numbers and contribute to the creation of a safer digital society.

Benefits of the New Measures

By implementing Liveness Detection technology, the government aims to create a more secure environment for mobile users. The system not only prevents identity theft but also enhances trust in digital services. As more people rely on mobile devices for financial transactions, banking, and communication, ensuring the security of these platforms becomes increasingly important.

Conclusion

The introduction of stricter SIM card registration measures marks a significant step towards combating online fraud. With the implementation of Liveness Detection technology and enhanced documentation requirements, the government is working to protect citizens from the growing threat of cybercrime. These efforts are essential in building a secure and trustworthy digital ecosystem for all users.
