Pakistan Cracks Down on Extremist Social Media Accounts

Pakistan has taken significant steps to combat extremist propaganda by blocking over 500 social media accounts linked to banned militant groups. This nationwide crackdown aims to disrupt the spread of extremist content and limit the reach of radical organizations operating within the country.

The government reported that more than 850 accounts were blocked, with many allegedly connected to groups such as the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), and Baloch Liberation Front (BLF). These groups are already designated as terrorist organizations by international bodies, including the United Nations, the United States, and the United Kingdom. The blocked accounts had a combined following of over two million users, highlighting the potential reach of extremist messaging.

Coordination Between Authorities and Platforms

The action was carried out through collaboration between the newly established National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency (NCCIA) and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The effort targeted multiple platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, X (formerly Twitter), Telegram, and WhatsApp. Notably, Federal IT Minister Shaza Fatima Khawaja secured direct cooperation from Telegram officials, despite the app being banned in Pakistan. This collaboration ensured faster removal of flagged accounts.

According to officials, Facebook and TikTok complied with over 90 percent of Pakistan’s removal requests, while X and WhatsApp showed only 30 percent compliance. This disparity underscores the challenges faced by authorities in effectively combating extremist content across different platforms.

Calls for Global Cooperation

In response, Islamabad has urged all global social media platforms to strengthen their monitoring systems and maintain direct coordination with Pakistani authorities. The government is also advocating for the permanent blocking of terrorist-linked accounts and the deployment of AI-based tools to enhance the detection and removal of extremist content.

Officials emphasized that mainstream Pakistani media remains free from extremist propaganda. However, they noted that militant groups are increasingly using online platforms to recruit members and incite violence. The crackdown is aimed at disrupting these activities and limiting their ability to reach new audiences.

Authorities stated that blocking these accounts is a key step in dismantling online networks used by extremist groups. By removing access to these platforms, the government hopes to reduce the visibility and influence of radical ideologies.
