£1-a-Day Supplement Claims to Reverse Aging: Experts Call NMD a 'Miracle Formula'

The Promise of NMN: A Potential Breakthrough in the Quest for Eternal Youth
Could the answer to eternal youth really be as simple as popping a daily 'wonder' pill? This question has sparked significant interest in a supplement known as Nicotinamide Mononucleotide, or NMN. Available in pharmacies and shops across the country, NMN is being hailed by some experts as a potential game-changer in the fight against aging.
Advocates claim that NMN supplements can knock years off your age, boost energy, enhance metabolism, and even improve brain health. Some research suggests it could reverse the aging process in certain cells and muscles. For instance, famous biohacker Bryan Johnson, who maintains the physique of a man in his 30s despite being 47, incorporates NMN into his anti-aging regimen.
However, not all experts are convinced. Many caution that most of the research conducted so far has involved mice or short-term human trials. More extensive studies are needed to confirm the safety and efficacy of higher doses of NMN, which are often used in animal experiments.
In the human body, NMN is converted into nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD), a crucial molecule found in every cell. NAD plays a vital role in fueling the seven genes responsible for aging. As we age, our NAD levels decline by about 50%, which can lead to various age-related diseases such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer’s.
NMN supplements aim to counteract this decline by supporting NAD levels. Dr. Paul Banwell, a consultant plastic and cosmetic surgeon, claims that taking NAD supplements can effectively reduce the visible signs of aging. He recommends starting with a regimen that includes sirtuin activators to synergistically boost NAD levels.
Dr. Sabine Donnai, a GP and founder of a private London health clinic, emphasizes the importance of NMN in optimizing cellular function. She states that when NAD is optimized through NMN, pain, inflammation, fatigue, and other aging-related issues decrease, while mental clarity, stamina, and energy increase.
Professor David Sinclair from Harvard Medical School, who has spent two decades researching ways to combat aging, believes NMN is one of the most promising prospects. In one study, he found that after just a week of consuming NMN, the cells of aging mice appeared identical to those of young mice. Their muscles also behaved like those of younger mice, suggesting a dramatic reversal of aging effects.
Despite these encouraging results, Dr. Cathy Slack, an associate professor at the University of Warwick, warns that translating findings from mice to humans is not always straightforward. She highlights the need for more long-term human trials to determine the safety and effectiveness of NMN at high doses.
Recent human trials have shown mixed results. A 2021 study involving runners found that high-dose NMN increased aerobic capacity over six weeks. Another trial published in 2022 showed that low-dose NMN improved muscle response and reduced drowsiness in older adults. A 2023 review highlighted that while NMN is becoming popular, most previous studies were on cell or animal models.
Chinese researchers noted that 12 human clinical trials are currently studying NMN supplementation. While oral NMN use is generally safe, they emphasize the need for longer, larger, and better-designed trials to determine optimal dosage and frequency.
Dr. Leonard Josipovic, a plastic surgeon and supplement specialist, notes that people taking NMN often report feeling more energetic and mentally sharp. Early studies suggest possible benefits for cardiovascular health, muscle endurance, and insulin sensitivity.
For now, experts recommend sticking to classic methods of preventing aging—good sleep, regular exercise, and a nutritious diet. Dr. Slack adds that we typically derive NAD from our diet, including fruits like avocados, dairy, and red meat. Our cells can also produce NMN indirectly from vitamin B3.
As the quest for eternal youth continues, the potential of NMN remains a topic of intense debate and research. While it may not be the ultimate solution, it could play a valuable role in maintaining cellular health and vitality as we age.
