China's Space Agency Unveils Detergent-Free Ozone Washing Machine for Space Use

Innovations in Space Laundry: A New Approach to Cleaning Clothes in Zero Gravity
Washing clothes in space presents a unique set of challenges. Unlike on Earth, where water is abundant and easily accessible, astronauts face significant limitations when it comes to using water for daily tasks. This scarcity has led to unconventional practices, such as wearing clothing until it becomes smelly before discarding it into cargo capsules that eventually burn up in Earth’s atmosphere.
Recently, Chinese scientists have introduced a groundbreaking solution to this problem. A new space washing machine has been developed by the China Astronaut Research and Training Center (CARTA), part of the Chinese Manned Space Agency (CMSA). This innovative device is designed to clean clothes with minimal use of water and no detergent, addressing the growing need for sustainable laundry solutions in space.
How the Space Washing Machine Works
The machine operates using a combination of mist and ozone. Instead of relying on large amounts of water, it sprays a fine mist onto the clothing, which is then treated with ozone gas. Ozone, a powerful oxidizing agent, helps eliminate bacteria, mold, and odors without the need for traditional detergents. This method not only conserves water but also reduces environmental impact, as ozone breaks down into oxygen after use.
The washing machine is compact and cube-shaped, slightly larger than a small carry-on bag. It weighs around 12 kg, making it suitable for transport aboard spacecraft. Each wash uses approximately 400 mL of water, sufficient for cleaning up to 800 grams (28 ounces) of clothing. This efficiency is crucial given the high cost of transporting water to space.
The Importance of Water Conservation in Space
Water is one of the most expensive resources to transport to space. On the International Space Station (ISS), water conservation is a top priority. NASA reports that the ISS currently recycles 90% of its water, including water used for washing faces, sweat, and even urine. The agency aims to increase this percentage to over 95% in the future.
The Chinese research team's development of an ozone-based washing machine aligns with these efforts. By minimizing water usage and eliminating the need for detergents, the machine contributes to more sustainable space travel. This innovation could be particularly valuable for long-duration missions to the Moon or Mars, where resupply missions are infrequent.
Other Efforts in Space Laundry Research
China is not the only country exploring solutions for space laundry. In 2021, NASA partnered with Tide to test a specialized detergent that allows washing with minimal water. Under the “Laundry in Space” project, researchers continue to develop efficient washing systems tailored for space environments.
The European Space Agency is also investigating alternative methods, such as ultrasonic washing and plasma technology, to reduce water consumption. These advancements highlight the global interest in finding practical and sustainable ways to manage personal hygiene in space.
Impact on Space Missions
The introduction of a space washing machine could significantly reduce the weight of clothing that astronauts need to carry. According to the Chinese Manned Space Agency, the new machine could cut the weight of clothing required for a lunar or Martian mission by over 60%. For a three-astronaut crew on a 15-year mission, this could mean reducing the amount of clothing from 3,383 kg to a much lighter load.
This innovation not only supports more efficient space travel but also enhances the comfort and well-being of astronauts during long-duration missions. As space exploration continues to push the boundaries of human capability, innovations like this will play a critical role in ensuring sustainability and safety.
