Chuseok Ticket Crisis: KORAIL Overload, 1 Million Waiting

Challenges in Chuseok Holiday Train Ticket Reservations
On the first day of ticket reservations for the Chuseok holiday, many users encountered significant difficulties as the Korea Railroad Corporation (KORAIL) app and website became inaccessible. This issue created frustration among travelers who were eager to secure their train tickets for the holiday period.
According to KORAIL, online reservations for Chuseok holiday train tickets began at 7 a.m. on the 17th. However, the system faced a temporary access disruption due to an overwhelming number of users attempting to access the app and website simultaneously. The problem persisted, with users only seeing the message “Moving to the holiday reservation screen” without any further progress. In some cases, even after accessing the system, the waiting list exceeded 1 million people, making it nearly impossible for users to complete their reservations.
Several users shared their frustrations, highlighting the challenges they faced. One user mentioned, “I gave up on reservations as the KORAIL server crashed.” Another said, “After waiting for a long time to get in, the wait number exceeded 1 million.” A third user expressed concern about the system’s reliability, stating, “It said service connection was pending, but I was automatically logged out after three minutes of logging in.”
In response to the issues, KORAIL issued an apology for the access delay that occurred around 7 a.m. on the 17th. The company attributed the problem to a system failure caused by the unusually long Chuseok holiday, which is approximately twice as long as usual. This extended break led to a surge in demand for train tickets, overwhelming the existing infrastructure.
To address the situation, KORAIL stated that emergency measures had been initiated to gradually restore the system. The company also noted that general ticket reservations outside the Chuseok holiday period were proceeding normally. Additionally, KORAIL emphasized its commitment to thoroughly inspecting and improving the system to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future. The goal is to ensure a stable and reliable reservation service for all users.
Key Details About the Reservation Process
KORAIL is conducting Chuseok holiday ticket reservations from the 15th to the 18th. On the 15th and 16th, advance reservations were available for specific groups, including seniors aged 65 and older, people with disabilities, and national merit recipients. Starting from the 17th, general reservations became available for all citizens. This phased approach aims to manage the high demand and provide fair access to train tickets for different segments of the population.
Despite the initial technical difficulties, KORAIL remains focused on resolving the issues and ensuring a smoother experience for future reservations. The company's efforts to improve its systems will be critical in handling the large volume of users during peak travel periods like Chuseok. For now, travelers are advised to remain patient and check for updates from KORAIL regarding the status of the reservation system.
