Daegu City Unveils Winning Design for New City Hall

Daegu City has officially announced the winner of its international design competition for the new city hall. The winning entry, titled ‘FORETscape: A Cultural Government Building Embracing the Forest’, was submitted by a consortium led by Now Dongin Architects Office Co., Ltd. This innovative design has been recognized for its thoughtful integration with the surrounding environment and its commitment to public engagement.

The competition attracted 29 domestic and international architectural firms, either as individual participants or in collaborative groups. These submissions resulted in a total of 14 entries that were evaluated by a panel of expert judges. Among these, the winning design stood out for its ability to connect key urban elements such as Gamsam Station, the new city hall, and Duryu Park. The concept also emphasizes efficient land use and the creation of open spaces that are accessible to the public.

The proposed structure spans two underground floors and 24 above-ground levels, covering a total floor area of 118,328.98 square meters. The name ‘FORETscape’ is a combination of the words ‘Foret’ (forest) and ‘Landscape’ (scenery), reflecting the project’s focus on blending natural elements with modern architecture. This approach aims to create a space that not only serves administrative functions but also enhances the cultural and environmental identity of the city.

The consortium responsible for the winning design includes A&U Design Group Architects Office Co., Ltd. and Kidan Architects Office Co., Ltd. These firms have collaborated to develop a vision that aligns with Daegu City’s long-term goals for sustainable urban development.

In addition to the recognition, the winning team will be granted priority negotiation rights for the basic and detailed design contracts, ensuring their vision can be fully realized. Furthermore, cash prizes totaling 140 million Korean won will be awarded to the second- to fifth-place entrants, acknowledging their contributions to the competition.

Daegu City plans to hold an awards ceremony at the Dongin Government Complex on the 22nd of the month. Following this event, the winning and finalist designs will be displayed to the public. The exhibition will take place in the lobby of the Dongin Government Complex from the 22nd to the 26th, and then move to the Sanggyeok Government Complex lobby from the 29th to October 2nd.

An Jung-gon, Director of Daegu City’s Administrative Bureau, emphasized the significance of the winning design. He stated, “This winning design marks the beginning of a new administrative space that will embody Daegu’s future. We will meticulously manage the design process to ensure it becomes a symbolic government building that citizens can take pride in.”

Looking ahead, Daegu City has outlined a clear timeline for the project. Basic and detailed design work is scheduled to begin in October, with the design expected to be completed by September 2026. Construction will commence by the end of 2026, and the new city hall is anticipated to be fully completed by 2030.

This initiative represents a significant step forward for Daegu, showcasing the city’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and community-centered development. The new city hall is not just a functional administrative building but a symbol of progress and civic pride.
