The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) stands as a monumental achievement for Ethiopia, not only in terms of infrastructure but also in shaping the country’s regional and international standing. Experts such as Associate Professor Yakob Arsano from Addis Ababa University have highlighted that Ethiopia is currently utilizing only 7% of its river waters, with the majority flowing into neighboring countries. The inauguration of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam has also helped dispel longstanding misconceptions about the Nile River. Additionally, the electricity generated from the dam has the potential to generate foreign currency through exports to neighboring countries, further strengthening Ethiopia’s economic position.

Environmental and Sustainable Development Impacts

Aklilu Fikreselassie, the World Resource Institute Country Representative, described the completion of GERD as a transformative step in "decolonizing" the Abay River. He pointed out that the dam plays a critical role in providing affordable clean energy, fostering regional integration, and promoting climate-resilient, sustainable development.

GERD is also pivotal for Ethiopia in fulfilling its international climate commitments, including its Nationally Determined Contributions and Sustainable Development Goals. The dam can contribute to regional stability by facilitating the integration of clean energy. It has the potential to drive high decarbonization, promote urban development, stimulate tourism, and reduce deforestation by encouraging a shift towards clean energy sources.

Aregawi Berhe, Director General for the Office of the Council for the Coordination of GERD, emphasized the active participation and support of citizens in completing the dam. He described GERD as the collective blood, labor, and dedication of the people, showcasing Ethiopia's capability to execute major projects independently.

He noted that Ethiopia will continue pursuing its dream of prosperity, leveraging GERD as a foundation for development. Aregawi urged the Ethiopian populace to remain united and actively engage in future development endeavors, asserting that no barriers are preventing Ethiopia from achieving growth and prosperity similar to that of developed nations.
