Evidence of Cambodian 'War Crime' Rockets Discovered in Surin

Evidence of War Crime Found in Northeastern Thailand

Soldiers and forensic experts have uncovered critical evidence suggesting a potential war crime in northeastern Thailand. The discovery includes ball bearings from Cambodian rockets that struck a local community during an attack in July, according to the Royal Thai Army.

The bearings were found in Ban Charok village, located in tambon Dan of Kap Choeng district in Surin province. This finding was made on Tuesday during an inspection conducted by military personnel and forensic specialists. The location is one of several areas in the region that were targeted during a five-day conflict between Thailand and Cambodia, which began on July 24.

The attack on July 24 resulted in significant casualties, with at least 40 people losing their lives on both sides. In Ban Charok village alone, two residents were killed and two others injured when the rockets hit. The impact of the attack left visible signs of destruction, including an explosion crater measuring 1.30 meters in diameter in front of a damaged house. Inside this crater, experts discovered numerous ball bearings.

Forensic experts from the Central Institute of Forensic Science have analyzed the findings and confirmed that rockets equipped with ball bearings are designed to cause maximum harm. These types of rockets are considered more dangerous than conventional metal shells because they disperse small, high-velocity projectiles over a wide area. This can lead to severe injuries or fatalities among civilians.

According to the Royal Thai Army, the use of such weapons in civilian areas constitutes a serious violation of international humanitarian principles. "When such shells hit civilian areas, they naturally cause widespread and great casualties among people," the army stated.

The military emphasized that if these rockets were fired intentionally or indiscriminately without regard for the impact on civilians, it would be classified as a war crime under international law. This raises concerns about the conduct of the conflict and the potential legal implications for those responsible.

The findings highlight the need for further investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack. International organizations and human rights groups may also be called upon to assess the situation and ensure that all parties involved adhere to established laws and norms governing armed conflicts.

This incident underscores the importance of maintaining accountability in warfare and protecting civilian populations from unnecessary harm. As the situation continues to unfold, the international community will be closely watching for any developments that could shed light on the events of July 24 and the actions taken by both nations during the conflict.

The presence of ball bearings in the attack site serves as a grim reminder of the destructive power of modern weaponry and the devastating consequences it can have on innocent lives. It also reinforces the necessity of upholding international laws and ensuring that those who violate them face appropriate consequences.
