Gombe Records Highest Snake Bite Cases in Nigeria
The National Emergency Committee on Snake Bite has highlighted that Gombe State has recorded the highest number of snake bite cases in Nigeria, attributed to its environmental conditions. Between January and July 2025, the Snake Bite and Research Centre in Kaltungo documented 1,829 cases of snake bites, with 23 fatalities reported during this period.
At the 2nd Scientific Conference of the Toxicology Society of Nigeria (TSN) in Gombe, Dr. Isma'il Jibrin, Chairman of the National Emergency Committee on Snake Bite, emphasized the severity of the issue. The conference was themed 'Exploring Indigenous Anti-Snake Venom Development and Therapy in Nigeria: Policies, Challenges and Opportunities.' During his address, Dr. Isma'il revealed that 75% of the victims are men, indicating a significant gender disparity in snake bite incidents.
He identified the carpet viper as the most dangerous species responsible for these incidents. Dr. Isma'il also expressed concerns over the high cost of anti-snake venom, noting that Nigeria is only permitted to produce it for local use under World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines. This restriction poses a challenge in making the treatment more accessible and affordable for affected communities.
Dr. Ibrahim Jalo Daudu, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of TSN, praised the choice of Gombe as the conference venue. He described the state as one that "grappling with snake bite challenges" and stressed the importance of the event in finding solutions. Dr. Daudu called for increased efforts towards the local production of anti-venom, which could significantly reduce costs and improve availability.
Gombe Deputy Governor, Dr. Manasseh Jatau, who represented Governor Inuwa Yahaya at the conference, highlighted the state's commitment to improving healthcare infrastructure. He mentioned that Gombe has constructed 114 primary healthcare centers across all wards, a move that has garnered international recognition. These facilities play a crucial role in providing timely medical care to those affected by snake bites.
The conference brought together experts, researchers, and healthcare professionals to discuss various aspects of snake bite management.
