A groundbreaking study conducted by researchers at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS) has provided new insights into how human activity has shaped the physical characteristics of animals over the past 1,000 years. The research reveals a significant shift in the size of both domestic and wild animal species, highlighting the profound impact of human intervention.

The study found that domestic animals have generally increased in size, while wild species have decreased in size since the Middle Ages. This trend is attributed to various factors, including changes in human practices, environmental conditions, and selective breeding. The findings suggest that human activity has become the primary driver of morphological evolution in animals over this period.

In contrast to the previous 7,000 years, when both domestic and wild animals evolved in a synchronized manner influenced mainly by environmental and climatic changes, the last millennium has seen a divergence in their development. This shift underscores the increasing influence of human activities on the natural world.

The researchers attribute the growth in size among domesticated animals such as sheep, goats, pigs, cows, chickens, and rabbits to several factors. These include intensive human-driven environmental changes, selective breeding practices aimed at enhancing productivity, and the demand for larger livestock for agricultural purposes. These factors have collectively contributed to the observed increase in size among these species.

On the other hand, the reduction in size among wild animals like deer, hares, and foxes is linked to intensified hunting pressures, habitat fragmentation, and the shrinking of natural ecosystems. As human populations expanded and land use changed, many wild species faced greater challenges in maintaining their size and numbers. The loss of suitable habitats and increased predation have likely played a key role in this decline.

The study, published in the journal PNAS, represents a large-scale, interdisciplinary effort involving bioarchaeologists, climate modelers, and archaeologists. Researchers analyzed over 80,000 bone measurements from 311 archaeological sites in southern France. These data were cross-referenced with paleoenvironmental, paleoclimatic, and archaeological information collected over the past three decades.

This comprehensive approach allowed the team to draw meaningful conclusions about the long-term effects of human activity on animal morphology. The findings offer a compelling illustration of how human societies have influenced animal populations and the environment over time.

Key factors contributing to the changes in animal size include:

  • Selective Breeding: For domestic animals, humans have actively selected for traits that enhance productivity, leading to larger body sizes.
