Kipkemoi Kibias named KETRACO's Acting CEO After Mativo's Sacking

Leadership Transition at KETRACO
The Kenya Electricity Transmission Company Limited (KETRACO) has undergone a significant leadership change, with Engineer John Mativo stepping down as the managing director on September 19. His tenure, which began in 2023, was expected to last until 2026. However, his departure came earlier than anticipated, and the reasons for his exit remain undisclosed.
In a statement issued by the company's board of directors, it was announced that Engineer Kipkemoi Kobias would take over as the acting managing director. The decision was made by the board, with the chairman, Mohamd Abdi, confirming the appointment. Kipkemoi will assume his new role following Mativo’s exit, marking a pivotal shift in the company’s leadership.
The board expressed its appreciation for Mativo’s contributions during his time at KETRACO. A communique from the board highlighted the importance of his work and wished him well in his future endeavors. "The Board of Directors would like to appreciate the outgoing Managing Director/CEO Dr. Eng. John Muoki Mativo for his invaluable service and contribution to the Company. We wish him well in his future endeavors," the statement read.
Mativo had been with KETRACO since 2010, gradually moving up through various technical and leadership positions before becoming the managing director. His career within the organization reflects a deep commitment to the power sector and a strong understanding of the challenges faced by the company.

Impact of the Leadership Change
The transition at KETRACO comes at a critical time for the company, as it continues to navigate the complexities of Kenya's energy landscape. With Kipkemoi stepping into the role, there is an expectation that his extensive experience and technical knowledge will help drive the company forward.
While the reasons behind Mativo's departure remain unclear, the board's decision to appoint Kipkemoi as the acting MD signals a confidence in his ability to lead KETRACO effectively. As the company moves forward, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how this leadership change impacts operations, strategic direction, and overall performance.
The shift in leadership also highlights the dynamic nature of the energy sector in Kenya, where experienced professionals are essential in ensuring reliable and sustainable power supply. With Kipkemoi at the helm, KETRACO is poised to continue its mission of advancing the country's electricity transmission infrastructure.
