Introduction to the Biogas Initiative in Kwara State

The Kwara State Government has launched a groundbreaking initiative aimed at addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable energy solutions within the livestock sector. As part of this effort, biogas machines are set to be deployed in major livestock markets across the state. This move is designed to mitigate environmental pollution, encourage the use of renewable energy, and support broader reforms in Nigeria’s livestock industry.

The project is being implemented under the World Bank-assisted Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRESS). The primary goal of this initiative is to convert animal waste into biogas, which can then be used as a clean energy source for market operations. This not only improves sanitation but also helps reduce methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas.

Key Stakeholders and Their Perspectives

During an inspection of Ipata and Mandate livestock markets in Ilorin, the General Manager of the Kwara State Environmental Protection Agency, Jide Aina, highlighted the significance of the biogas machines. He described the initiative as a “dual-benefit approach” that tackles waste management issues while supporting the state's climate action goals.

“This initiative is a win-win for traders and the entire state. It will lead to a cleaner environment, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and provide alternative energy sources while enhancing productivity in the livestock sector,” Aina said.

Olusoji Oyawoye, the State Project Coordinator of L-PRESS, emphasized that the project aligns with the government's commitment to sustainable agricultural practices. He noted that the initiative is part of a larger strategy to promote environmentally friendly methods in the livestock sector.

Hajia Aminat Jidah, representing the Head of Department for Waste Management, assured traders of continuous engagement to ensure the project's successful implementation and long-term sustainability.

The Kwara State Government, through the Kwara Water and Environmental Protection Agency (KWEPA) and the L-PRESS team, aims to position the state as a leader in sustainable livestock production. This initiative could serve as a model for other states looking to adopt climate-smart agriculture and energy transition strategies.

Nigeria’s livestock sector has historically faced several challenges, including low productivity, inadequate animal health systems, and increasing environmental degradation. According to the Food and Agriculture Organisation, the sector contributes significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily due to methane from animal waste, open grazing, and inefficient waste disposal.

To address these issues, the Federal Government, through the National Livestock Transformation Plan and the L-PRESS project, has been working closely with states to reform the sector. This includes encouraging ranching, improving animal nutrition, and promoting innovative solutions like biogas.

Timeliness and Relevance of the Initiative

A Kwara-based agronomist, Segun Olaiya, highlighted the importance of adopting biogas technology in light of the state's growing livestock population and the rising demand for climate-smart infrastructure in agriculture.

Beyond improving hygiene in livestock markets, the initiative could also serve as a blueprint for integrating renewable energy into Nigeria’s agricultural value chains.

Energy Transition and Climate Goals

Nigeria’s 2060 net-zero target relies heavily on reducing emissions from agriculture, forestry, and land use—sectors that account for approximately 25% of the country’s total emissions. Waste-to-energy solutions like biogas are increasingly viewed as viable options for achieving this goal, particularly in rural and semi-urban areas where access to grid electricity remains limited.

For livestock traders, the deployment of biogas machines in markets such as Ipata and Mandate offers multiple benefits. It not only simplifies waste management but also provides an affordable alternative to firewood, charcoal, and diesel-powered generators, which contribute to deforestation and air pollution.
