Liberian Scientist Dougbeh Chris Nyan Wins 2025 African Genius Award

Recognition of a Visionary Scientist

Dr. Dougbeh Christopher Nyan, a leading biomedical scientist from Liberia, has been honored with the prestigious African Genius Award 2025 for his remarkable contributions to science, medicine, and technology. This award is a testament to his innovative spirit and dedication to advancing healthcare in Africa.

Nyan is one of 16 honorees selected from over 100 nominees across the continent. These individuals represent various countries such as Ghana, Kenya, South Africa, and Nigeria. Their achievements span multiple fields including medicine, science, and the humanities, showcasing the breadth of talent on the African continent.

Dr. Mmusi Maimane, the host of this year’s ceremony, expressed his admiration for the awardees. “We want to celebrate African achievers. So many of them are talented and it is unbelievable,” he said. “We would like you to support us in celebrating exceptional Africans.”

In his acceptance speech, Nyan reflected on the significance of the award. “It is an honor to be awarded the African Genius Award 2025 and to be counted among several innovative Africans,” he stated. “I received this award as a symbol of our African ancestral pride, resilience, determination, and courage.”

As the Director General of the National Public Health Institute of Liberia (NPHIL), Nyan has made significant contributions to public health. He is internationally recognized for inventing the Rapid Multiplex Isothermal Diagnostic Test, known as the NYAN-TEST. This device can detect multiple infectious diseases within an hour and holds three United States patents. Its low cost and ease of use make it a valuable tool in resource-limited settings.

Nyan recently led a team of scientists in identifying the Mpox Clade IIa in Liberia, marking the first discovery of this strain since monkeypox was initially detected in the country in 1970. His work continues to have a profound impact on public health and disease control.

The African Genius Award, founded in South Africa, celebrates Africans who contribute to self-determination, dignity, and excellence on the continent. The award has institutional partners such as the University of Johannesburg, Plus-94 Research, Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Institute, The African Dream, and Brandhill Africa.

The nomination letter to Nyan highlighted his contributions, stating, “We are honored to recognize your work, and we celebrate the brilliance, innovation, and leadership you represent.”

Under Nyan's leadership, the National Public Health Institute of Liberia has been recognized as a Regional Center of Excellence by the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. This recognition adds to his long list of honors, including the African Innovation Award (2017), the Ward Lifetime Achievement Award in Science and Medicine, and Liberia's Humane Order of African Redemption.

Nyan's journey reflects the potential of African scientists to drive innovation and make a global impact. His work not only addresses local health challenges but also contributes to the broader scientific community. As he continues to lead and inspire, Dr. Dougbeh Christopher Nyan stands as a beacon of hope and progress for Africa and beyond.
