Liquid biopsy tools detect diseases at low cost

Revolutionary Devices for Rapid Disease Diagnosis
In recent years, there has been significant progress in the development of devices that can rapidly diagnose a wide range of diseases. These include emerging infectious diseases such as COVID-19, Lyme disease, and AIDS, as well as chronic conditions like cancer and dementia. The key to this advancement lies in the rapid development of "liquid biopsy" technology, which allows for the detection of disease markers through substances found in the blood.
A notable breakthrough came from a research team at Arizona State University (ASU) in the United States. They developed an innovative device called "NasRED," which is capable of diagnosing various emerging infectious diseases from just a single drop of blood. This groundbreaking discovery was published in the prestigious international academic journal ACS Nano on the 12th of last month.
According to the ASU research team, the NasRED device is a compact cube measuring 6.7 cm on each side. It is not only portable but also highly accurate and sensitive. The device can detect even the smallest amounts of biological markers in the blood. For instance, it can identify disease indicators in a volume of blood equivalent to a single drop of ink in a large body of water—such as 20 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The cost of using this device is remarkably low, at just $2 per diagnosis. The researchers emphasized that the use of this device could enable a swift response to infectious diseases before they spread widely.
Advancements in Dementia Detection
Another significant development comes from Fuji Revio Diagnostics, a subsidiary of the Fuji Revio Group in Japan. In May, the company received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for its blood test kit called "Lumipulse." This kit is designed to differentiate and diagnose diseases, even when only a small amount of dementia-related proteins are present in the blood. This innovation offers a promising approach for early detection of neurodegenerative conditions.
Early Cancer Detection Technology
Grail, a leading U.S.-based company specializing in liquid biopsy technology, has made headlines with its "Multi-Cancer Early Detection (MCED) test." This advanced technology can detect the presence of cancer cells in over 20 different types of cancer, often up to three years before symptoms appear. The company is currently seeking FDA approval for this groundbreaking test, which could revolutionize the way cancer is diagnosed and treated.
Innovations in South Korea
South Korea has also contributed to the field of liquid biopsy with the launch of "ai-CANCERCH" by GC Genome in 2023. This test, available domestically, can predict the likelihood of six types of cancer based on a single blood draw. It is particularly effective in identifying the risk of lung cancer, liver cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, esophageal cancer, and ovarian cancer. The ability to detect these cancers early can significantly improve patient outcomes and treatment options.
The Future of Diagnostic Technology
The advancements in liquid biopsy technology are reshaping the landscape of medical diagnostics. With devices like NasRED, Lumipulse, and ai-CANCERCH, the future looks promising for early and accurate detection of a wide range of diseases. These innovations not only enhance diagnostic capabilities but also make healthcare more accessible and affordable. As research continues, we can expect even more sophisticated tools that will further improve patient care and public health outcomes.
