Top Airport in the United States: Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport

For travelers seeking a seamless and enjoyable airport experience, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) has emerged as the top choice in the United States. According to JD Power's North America Airport Satisfaction Study, which surveyed 30,439 travelers from the US and Canada who flew within the last 30 days, MSP achieved an impressive score of 660 out of 1,000. This performance placed it above other major airports such as Detroit Metropolitan, Phoenix Sky Harbor, JFK, and Dallas/Fort Worth.

Michael Taylor, managing director of travel, hospitality, and retail at JD Power, highlighted several factors contributing to MSP’s success. He noted that the airport was easy to access, with friendly staff, impressive and clean terminal facilities, and outstanding food, drink, and retail offerings. Passengers also expressed trust in the airport, which played a significant role in its high satisfaction score.

The success of MSP is partly attributed to improvements made by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The introduction of TSA PreCheck, which allows travelers to keep belts, jackets, and laptops on during security screening, helped enhance the passenger experience. Additionally, the TSA introduced expedited lanes and discounts for U.S. military members as part of its 'Serve with Honor, Travel with Ease' program.

TSA PreCheck is a paid service designed for low-risk travelers, offering a smoother experience at security checkpoints. It allows passengers to use shorter lines and enjoy perks such as not having to remove belts or light jackets, and keeping laptops and liquids in carry-on bags. These enhancements have contributed significantly to MSP's ranking as the top airport.

Other airports are working to catch up. Detroit Metropolitan, a past winner of JD Power awards, is upgrading its dining options. Meanwhile, JFK and Dallas/Fort Worth are in the middle of major construction projects, which have affected their scores but promise a better experience in the future. Taylor explained that Dallas/Fort Worth, a previous multiple JD Power award winner, was just slightly behind MSP in most dimensions this year and is making improvements to its food, drinks, and retail offerings, which could help it challenge for the top spot again.

JFK is currently experiencing major construction that is disrupting access to the airport. This situation is expected to continue for the next few years, with a greatly improved airport anticipated at the end of the construction period. Similarly, Dallas/Fort Worth is phasing in and out of major construction, with the goal of providing a better airport experience once completed.

On the other hand, Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) received a poor score, largely due to overcrowding and the need for terminal upgrades. O’Hare was recently named the nation's most stressful airport, with Taylor explaining that the airport has yet to begin its major terminal reconstruction. As one of the largest and busiest airports, passengers are likely to face frustrations while traveling through Chicago.

Newark Liberty International Airport finished in last place, primarily due to access issues and air traffic problems. Although it has made headlines for air traffic controller issues, Taylor emphasized that access problems were the main factor behind its low ranking. He noted that airports with access issues often struggle to achieve higher scores because these issues create anxiety for travelers trying to meet departure times. If passengers are stressed about time, they may not fully enjoy what the airport has to offer.

Newark is undergoing Terminal B construction and inter-terminal train restoration. However, improvements at large airports can take years to complete. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson, the nation's busiest airport, handled 5.12 million passengers in August but only made it into the top 15. Despite this, its food scene remains a crowd favorite.

As the aviation industry continues to evolve, airports across the country are striving to improve their services and meet the expectations of travelers. While some airports are leading the way with innovative initiatives and infrastructure upgrades, others are working to address longstanding challenges and enhance the overall passenger experience.
