NIS Boosts Daily Passport Output to 5,000

Nigeria's Passport System Undergoes Major Transformation

Nigeria has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its passport issuance process. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has increased its daily passport production capacity from approximately 300 to as many as 5,000. This dramatic improvement comes after the launch of a new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre in Abuja.

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, highlighted this development during an inspection of the facility at the NIS Headquarters. He called the initiative a major milestone in Nigeria’s 62-year history of passport issuance. The minister emphasized that the old system was decentralized and relied on outdated machines, which could only produce between 250 and 300 passports per day.

With the introduction of the new centralised system, the NIS is now capable of processing between 4,500 and 5,000 passports each day within just four to five hours of operation. This advancement marks a shift toward more efficient and streamlined service delivery for citizens.

“This is a game-changer for passport processing in Nigeria. We promised two-week delivery, and we’re now pushing for one week. Automation and optimisation are crucial for keeping this promise to Nigerians,” Tunji-Ojo stated. His remarks underscore the government’s commitment to improving public services and meeting the expectations of the people.

The minister further explained that for the first time since the establishment of the NIS in 1963, Nigeria now operates a centralised passport production system. This aligns with global standards and is expected to enhance the uniformity, efficiency, and integrity of Nigerian travel documents worldwide.

Tunji-Ojo added that the centralisation initiative is part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader reform agenda. The goal is to strengthen service delivery and restore public confidence in government institutions. By implementing such reforms, the administration aims to create a more transparent and effective system that benefits all Nigerians.

Key benefits of the new system include:

  • Enhanced Efficiency: The ability to process thousands of passports daily significantly reduces waiting times.
  • Improved Accuracy: Centralised processing ensures consistency and reduces errors associated with manual systems.
  • Global Standards Compliance: The new system brings Nigeria in line with international practices for passport issuance and security.
  • Increased Transparency: A more structured process allows for better oversight and accountability.

The centralisation effort also reflects a broader shift in governance under President Tinubu. The administration has prioritized reforms aimed at improving public services and fostering trust in government institutions. This includes initiatives across various sectors, from healthcare to education, all designed to enhance the quality of life for citizens.

In addition to the technical upgrades, the new system is expected to have a positive impact on the economy. Faster passport processing can facilitate international travel for business, tourism, and academic pursuits, contributing to economic growth and global engagement.

As the NIS continues to implement these changes, the focus remains on delivering reliable, timely, and secure passport services. The success of this initiative could serve as a model for other government agencies looking to modernize their operations and improve public satisfaction.

Overall, the transformation of Nigeria’s passport system represents a critical step toward a more efficient, transparent, and citizen-centric government. With continued investment in technology and infrastructure, the country is well-positioned to meet the evolving needs of its population.
