Pakistan Committed to IAEA Collaboration for Peaceful Nuclear Progress

Recognition of Pakistan's Nuclear Advancements

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has acknowledged Pakistan’s consistent progress in developing its civil nuclear technology capabilities. This recognition came during a meeting between the IAEA Director General, Rafael Mariano Grossi, and Dr. Ali Raza Anwar, Chairman of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), on the sidelines of the 69th IAEA General Conference in Vienna.

During the discussion, Mr. Grossi expressed appreciation for Pakistan's collaborative efforts with the IAEA. He highlighted the country’s achievements in expanding its civil nuclear energy capacity, noting that Pakistan's nuclear power program is progressing at a steady pace. A key example of this progress is the ongoing construction of Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-5 (C-5). Mr. Grossi recalled witnessing the first concrete pouring at the site in February 2025, which he described as a significant milestone in Pakistan's pursuit of clean and sustainable nuclear energy to enhance energy security.

Areas of Cooperation and Initiatives

The IAEA Director General and PAEC Chairman also reviewed areas of cooperation under various IAEA initiatives. One such initiative is Atoms4Food, which leverages nuclear technology to improve crop yields, ensure food safety, and manage pests effectively. Another project discussed was Rays of Hope, aimed at expanding access to nuclear medicine and radiotherapy for cancer care across the Asia-Pacific region.

Mr. Grossi commended Pakistan's active participation in these programs, emphasizing the country's contributions to capacity-building, training, and the application of nuclear knowledge for socio-economic development. He noted that Pakistan remains a crucial partner in the peaceful use of nuclear science and technology, contributing significantly to regional and global efforts.

Commitment to Peaceful Applications

The PAEC Chairman reaffirmed Pakistan's dedication to the peaceful applications of nuclear technology, aligning with national development goals and IAEA guidelines. He emphasized that Pakistan's nuclear power plants operate under the highest safety standards and play a vital role in the energy mix by providing reliable, low-carbon electricity. Additionally, he pointed out that PAEC's activities are closely aligned with the IAEA's vision of using nuclear technology for peace, health, and prosperity.

Regional Contributions and Future Collaboration

The meeting also provided an opportunity to discuss Pakistan's contributions to regional initiatives under the IAEA, particularly in the Asia-Pacific region. Pakistani expertise in nuclear applications is being shared with other Member States, highlighting the country's growing influence and commitment to international cooperation.

Pakistan reiterated its determination to continue working with the IAEA and other Member States to advance peaceful nuclear cooperation, promote sustainable development, and improve the quality of life for people across the region. This collaboration underscores the importance of nuclear technology in addressing global challenges while fostering economic growth and regional stability.
