Police Stop Private Ambulance in Narcotics Raid at La

Seized Ambulance Linked to Cannabis Trafficking in Accra
Authorities in Accra have made a significant seizure of a private ambulance allegedly involved in the transportation of cannabis. The incident took place on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, when the Accra Regional Police Command intercepted a Hyundai H1 ambulance at La in Accra. The vehicle, registered under GX 277-20, was found in front of the Jamboree Drinking Spot at La Maami after a period of sustained surveillance.
The police action followed an investigation into the suspicious activities of the vehicle, which led to the arrest of a suspect named Kwame Mananyi Tuanda, aged 39. According to a statement issued by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs for the Accra Region, the suspect claimed ownership of the ambulance and its contents at the time of the interception.
During a search of the vehicle, law enforcement discovered sacks of dried leaves hidden within the ambulance. Further examination revealed a total of 700 parcels and 473 wrappers containing the suspected cannabis material. These findings indicate a large-scale operation involving the distribution of illicit substances.
Preliminary investigations uncovered that the consignment had been transported from Kpando in the Volta North Region to Accra with the intent of further distribution. The suspect reportedly admitted to being involved in the illegal trade since 2024, highlighting a prolonged period of criminal activity.
In addition to the drug trafficking, the suspect also used the ambulance for transporting deceased individuals. This dual use of a legitimate service vehicle underscores the extent of his criminal operations.
The suspect had previously used a Toyota Highlander for similar purposes before acquiring the Hyundai Hiace. He later modified the vehicle by adding a siren and branding it as an ambulance, thereby disguising its true purpose. The modifications allowed him to operate under the guise of a medical service while engaging in illicit activities.
Following the seizure, the vehicle has been impounded, and all relevant exhibits have been retained for evidential purposes. Authorities are currently arranging for the substances to be sent to the Police Forensic Science Laboratory for detailed analysis. This step is crucial in confirming the nature of the seized materials and building a strong case against the suspect.
The suspect is currently being processed for court proceedings, with ongoing investigations aimed at uncovering any additional links or accomplices involved in the operation. The Accra Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating drug trafficking and other criminal activities.
The command has also issued a public warning against the misuse of legitimate service vehicles for unlawful purposes. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and the need for continued efforts to ensure public safety and uphold the law.
Through such actions, the police aim to deter potential offenders and reinforce their role in maintaining order and security within the community. The case highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement in addressing the growing issue of drug-related crimes and the need for robust strategies to combat them effectively.
