Punjab Unveils First Co-Ablation Cancer Treatment Center

A New Era in Cancer Treatment Begins in Punjab
Punjab has made a groundbreaking advancement in the field of cancer care with the establishment of the country's first-ever 'Co-Ablation' treatment facility. This innovative approach is set to transform the way cancer patients are treated, offering a modern and minimally invasive alternative to traditional methods such as chemotherapy or surgery.
The advanced treatment was officially launched by the Chief Minister of Punjab, Maryam Nawaz Sharif, on Thursday. Officials have described this development as a historic milestone for both Pakistan and Punjab’s health sector. The state-of-the-art equipment used for Co-Ablation was imported from China and has already shown promising results in treating various types of cancer.
What is Co-Ablation?
Co-Ablation is a technique that uses controlled heat generated by electrical energy to destroy affected tissues—specifically tumors—in a safe and precise manner. Unlike conventional treatments, this method causes less pain and discomfort for patients, while also enabling faster recovery times. It is particularly beneficial for patients who may not be suitable candidates for surgery due to other health complications.
The first dedicated Co-Ablation Centre has been established at Mayo Hospital Lahore. Doctors and support staff at the hospital have completed specialized training to ensure they can effectively operate the new technology. So far, a team of Mayo Hospital doctors has successfully performed operations on two patients suffering from lung and breast cancers. Additionally, cases involving tumors in the liver's blood vessels and breast tissue have also been treated successfully through this procedure.
A Regional First with National Impact
During the inauguration ceremony, Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz emphasized that no hospital in the region, including India, currently has a Co-Ablation machine. She highlighted the importance of investing in the treatment of cancer patients, stating that if resources are not allocated for their care, they serve little purpose elsewhere.
She further announced that cancer patients from across Pakistan would be treated at the center, with all services provided free of charge. This initiative is expected to bring relief to many families who previously had limited access to advanced cancer treatment options.
Currently, the Co-Ablation Center at Mayo Hospital is treating breast, liver, and lung cancers. Plans are in place to expand the services to include kidney cancer treatment in the near future. Additional treatments for gallbladder, bone marrow, and soft tissue cancers are also being considered.
Success Stories and Future Expansion
The Chief Minister shared the success stories of the first five patients treated using the Co-Ablation technique. One of them, Muhammad Asghar, underwent a successful 60-minute procedure for a complex liver cancer case. These early successes have reinforced the potential of this treatment to change lives.
In addition to the existing facility, the Punjab government has announced plans to procure five additional Co-Ablation machines. These will be installed at Nishtar Hospital Multan, Rawalpindi, and three newly constructed Nawaz Sharif Cancer Hospitals. The first of these hospitals is expected to become operational by December.
Commitment to Medical Advancement
The Chief Minister expressed her gratitude to key officials, including Secretary Azmat Mehmood, Dr. Mahmood, and Dr. Shehzad Kareem Bhatti, for their efforts in setting up the Mayo Hospital center. She assured that the Punjab government will continue to provide the necessary facilities and training for doctors and paramedics to master this advanced technology.
As a revolutionary advancement in medical science, the Co-Ablation Center is open not only for patients from Punjab but also for those from across Pakistan. The Chief Minister reiterated that serving the people, especially those in distress, is the core mission of her government.
A Model for the Future
The Chief Minister expressed hope that this pioneering facility would serve as a model for other hospitals across the province. By ensuring wider access to modern cancer treatment, the center aims to improve outcomes for patients and reduce the burden on families affected by this disease.
This initiative marks a significant step forward in the fight against cancer in Pakistan. With continued investment and expansion, the Co-Ablation Center has the potential to become a beacon of hope for countless patients seeking effective and affordable treatment options.
