Unusual Seal with Neck Piping Captures Attention

A unique seal spotted on Rathlin Island has become the focus of attention from wildlife officials and marine experts. The animal, which bears black piping around its neck, is currently under observation by authorities. The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (Daera) has been visiting the island every two weeks to monitor the seal’s condition, and it is currently described as "healthy and alert."

The seal was first brought to the attention of Exploris Aquarium in August. According to Euan Morrison, the head keeper at the aquarium, there are reports suggesting that the tubing around the seal's neck may have been present for several months. Despite this, the seal appears to be in good health, showing signs of being active and well-nourished.

Morrison explained the challenges involved in removing the tubing. “We could consider darting the seal and trying to catch it, but if we do that, it will likely disappear into the water. That would not end well for the seal if it falls asleep out there,” he said. He added that catching the animal would require someone to "more or less" jump on it, which would demand being very close. However, he noted that the seal is currently very fit and stays near the water’s edge, making it difficult to approach.

“At the moment, it looks far too fit and healthy; it's sitting at the edge of the water,” Morrison said. “We’re not going to get within a couple of hundred metres of it, never mind get hands on it.”

Despite the unusual appearance of the seal, Morrison emphasized that it is showing all the signs of good health. “It's showing all the signs we really want to see; head up, tail up, it looks nice and fat,” he said. The seal appears to be hunting effectively and has not shown any signs of slowing down, even with the tubing around its neck.

Challenges in Intervention

Daera officials are working closely with Exploris Aquarium to explore potential intervention options when the situation allows. A spokesperson for Daera stated that Exploris has assessed the seal as being healthy and alert. However, the presence of other seals nearby complicates any efforts to intervene, as it could cause a wider disturbance to the colony and potentially lead to injuries.

Officials are continuing to monitor the situation and have encouraged members of the public to report any further sightings of the seal. They also urge people to maintain a safe distance from seal pups, as disturbing them can have negative consequences for their well-being.

Ongoing Monitoring and Public Involvement

The seal's unusual appearance has sparked interest and concern among local communities and wildlife enthusiasts. While the current assessment is positive, the long-term effects of the tubing on the seal remain unknown. Authorities are keeping a close watch on the animal and are prepared to take action if necessary.

Public awareness and cooperation are key in ensuring the safety of the seal and its environment. By reporting sightings and avoiding direct interaction, members of the public can play an important role in supporting conservation efforts. As the situation develops, updates will continue to be provided to ensure the best possible outcome for the seal and its habitat.
