Government Commitment to Cancer Care in Nigeria

The federal government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its dedication to reducing the burden of cancer, particularly prostate cancer, which remains a significant health challenge across the continent. This commitment was emphasized during the Science of Advanced Prostate Cancer in Africa (SoAPCA) Conference 2025, held in Lagos, where experts and stakeholders gathered to discuss strategies for tackling the rising incidence of the disease.

Dr. Kehinde Ololade, Special Adviser to the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare on Technical Matters, highlighted the administration's tangible efforts. He noted that under the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the government is actively working to improve cancer care through various initiatives. One such initiative includes the recent commissioning of three comprehensive cancer centers in Enugu, Edo, and Katsina states. These facilities are designed to provide advanced oncology services, including early detection and treatment, thereby improving access to quality healthcare for patients in different regions of the country.

Prostate cancer has become one of the most prevalent cancers among African men, with alarming statistics showing late-stage diagnoses and poor survival rates. In Southern Africa, the incidence of prostate cancer increased by nearly 60% between 2002 and 2018. However, less than 4% of global clinical trials are conducted on the continent, highlighting a critical gap in research and treatment options.

During the conference, keynote speaker Prof. Folakemi Odedina, founder of the Prostate Cancer Transatlantic Consortium (CaPTC), addressed the need for inclusive clinical trials that consider cultural and lifestyle factors. She emphasized that dietary habits and cooking practices play a role in shaping unique risk patterns for prostate cancer in Africa. Odedina warned that without adequate representation of African men in global studies, treatment outcomes will remain unequal.

She also advocated for decentralized clinical trials that bring research closer to communities through local clinics, telemedicine, and mobile health workers. According to her, African-led Clinical Trial Units could serve as operational backbones, while harmonized regulations through the African Medicines Agency would help reduce approval delays for multi-country studies.

A Growing Threat and the Need for Local Solutions

Prof. Abidemi Omonisi, President of the Nigerian Cancer Society, described prostate cancer as a silent but growing threat. He pointed out several challenges, including limited funding, widespread stigma, and a shortage of trained oncologists. Many patients present at advanced stages due to ignorance and cultural misconceptions, often mistaking symptoms for less severe conditions.

Omonisi stressed the importance of sustainable financing and urged governments to invest in training more oncologists and pathologists to meet the increasing demand for cancer care. He argued that reliance on external funding is not a long-term solution and called for Africa to take ownership of its cancer future.
